Cormier Wins UFC Belt
May 24, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
LAS VEGAS -- Former Cowboy wrestler Daniel Cormier is new Light Heavyweight UFC Champion after his strong performance against Anthony Johnson on Saturday night inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
"I am the champion," Cormier said. "I'm very proud of what I've accomplished. I fought a very tough opponent that deserved to be there...Tonight, I think I was more focused on my wrestling and doing what actually got me to the show."
Cormier won by submission, executing a rear-naked choke in the third round, which caused Johnson to tap out. The win puts Cormier at 16-1 in his MMA career and 5-1 in UFC competition.
His only MMA loss came in January at the hands of defending champion Jon Jones in his first shot at the UFC title. Cormier was out-fought and loss by unanimous decision.
Due to a disciplinary issue, Jones was stripped of his title and Cormier was given another shot at the belt, which he made count.
Cormier becomes the third Cowboy to win a UFC title. He joins the likes of Randy Couture and Johny Hendricks.Â
