Dieringer Wins in Times Square
May 21, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
NEW YORK CITY -- Oklahoma State wrestling standout Alex Dieringer competed in Beat the Streets' Salsa in the Square event on Thursday evening in Times Square, where he was victorious.
The event featured Team USA against Team Cuba in Greco-Roman, women's freestyle and men's freestyle.
Fresh off his second-consecutive NCAA Division I championship, Dieringer faced three-time Division II champion Joey Davis of Notre Dame College in a special challenge match. The bout was contested with freestyle rules.
There was not much action in the first period as the Cowboy led 1-0 due to a passivity call on Davis.
In the second period, Dieringer was hit with a passivity warning and put against the clock, where he had 30 seconds to score. With just seconds left, Dieringer earned a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Shortly after, the Poke notched another takedown and two turns to go up 9-0. Davis was not able to keep up and the Cowboy walked away victorious.
"This was a great experience to wrestle in Times Square," Dieringer said. "On top of that, it was for a great cause. I wrestled pretty conservative the first period, but I opened up in the second and widened the lead. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I hope to come back in the future."
