Caldwell Wins Gold, Outstanding Wrestler at Pan Am Championships

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Former Oklahoma State wrestler and career four-time All-American Tyler Caldwell was named Outstanding Wrestler after winning gold at the Pan American Championships this weekend at 74 kilograms. Fellow Cowboy and two-time NCAA champion Chris Perry took home silver at 86 kg.
Caldwell, a 2014 University World Champion, went 4-0 at the tournament, shutting out all of his opponents.
Caldwell earned his first two wins by technical fall, defeating both Edison Hurtado (Colombia) and Yoan Blanco Reinoso (Ecuador), 11-0.
In the semifinals, Caldwell picked up a big 9-0 win over Cuban Luis Quintana to move on to the finals, where he met up with Canada's Jevon Balfour. The Cowboy continued his dominance and took out the Canadian, 9-0, to win his first Pan American Championships title.
Perry finished second, falling in a tough 3-1 bout to Cuba's Yurieski Torreblanca in the 86 kg finals. Perry earned his spot in the finals by taking out Jose Mercado Estacio (Ecuador) by pin, Matthew Miller (Canada) with a 7-0 decision and Pedro Ceballos Fuentes (Venezuela), 7-2.
