Former Cowboy great hurls Angels past Yankees
Former Oklahoma State All-American Andrew Heaney recorded his first Major League Baseball win Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim southpaw turned in a dominating performance against the New York Yankees.
In his second-career start with the Angels, Heaney worked seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits. He racked up seven strikeouts and walked two in the 2-1 win.
"It was great," Heaney told Angels.com. "It was my sixth or seventh start — eventually I just wanted to get it done. It's something to be proud of, that you're helping the team win."
Heaney starred at OSU from 2010-12 and won 20 games in his three seasons in a Cowboy uniform. As a junior, he was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and a consensus All-American after going 8-2 with a 1.60 ERA and leading the NCAA with 140 strikeouts. He was drafted with the ninth overall pick of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins.
An Oklahoma City native, Heaney went 0-3 with a 5.83 ERA in seven appearances with Miami as a rookie in 2014 before being traded in the offseason.
Heaney started 2015 at the Angels' Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City and was 6-2 with a 4.71 ERA in 14 starts. He made his debut with Anaheim on June 24 against Houston and picked up a no-decision after allowing one run and striking out five in six innings.
