OSU Track and Field Finishes Day One in Fayetteville
April 10, 2015 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The field events took center stage on the first day of the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday, and Oklahoma State was represented well by its 10 athletes.
The first event of the day was the women's discus where three Cowgirls competed and Ieva Zarankaite earned her third top-five finish in four meets this season. She threw a 49.14m/161-3 to snag fifth place in the competition.
While her throw is good enough for eighth in the Big 12, Zarankaite already owns the best throw in the conference this season with a 54.13m/177-7 that she threw at the Tulsa Duels in March.
Arlando Brewer-Johnson, typically a sprinter for the Cowboys, made his season debut in the long jump, recording a mark of 6.86m/22-6.25 and finishing eighth. He will also compete in the 100, 200 and 4X100-meter relay Saturday at the John McDonnell Invitational.
The women's long jump wrapped up today's competition and Brittney Reid topped her season-best in the event when she landed a 5.31m/17-5.25 mark, which was good enough for fifth in her flight and 11th place overall.
"This is an odd weekend for us," coach Dave Smith said. "We're kind of in the middle of coming off of a big weekend and gearing up for the Drake Relays next weekend. There are people who are trying to catch a qualifying mark and some people who are running for the first time all season."
The John McDonnell Invitational wraps up Saturday with a full slate of running events and the remaining field events beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and ending at 7:50 p.m. with one heat of the women's 3,000-meter run.
