Cowboys Fall At Oral Roberts, 4-2
March 31, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
TULSA, Okla. -- An eighth-inning rally lifted Oral Roberts to a 4-2 win over 11th-ranked Oklahoma State Tuesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 19-9 on the season, while ORU's eighth-straight win saw the Golden Eagles improve to 18-9.
Anthony Sequeira was the hero for ORU as his two-out, two-RBI double brought home the game winning runs in the bottom of the eighth before he sealed the win on the mound in the ninth with his second save of the season.
"ORU played a good game and got a clutch hit late in the game so you tip your cap to them," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "It was a good, balanced game. Neither side swung the bat particularly well, and you can probably attribute that to the pitchers.
"In the end, (ORU) had one quality swing that made the difference in the game. They did a nice job; they have a good team."
ORU took the game's initial lead when Matt Brandy delivered a two-run home run off OSU starter Conor Costello in the top of the first inning.
After being set down in order in each of the first three innings by ORU right-hander Bryce Howe, the Cowboys would tie things up in the fourth.
Tim Arakawa led off the inning with a single, and following a walk to Donnie Walton and a sacrifice bunt by Gage Green, Costello brought home OSU's first run with an RBI groundout. Up next, Dustin Williams delivered a two-out, RBI single to tie the score at 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked until the eighth despite both teams having scoring opportunities.
In the sixth, Arakawa led off the inning with a single, and Walton followed with a sacrifice bunt. That brought up Green, who ripped a double to right-center field to put Cowboys at second and third with just one out.
But OSU could not take advantage as Tyler Buss struck out Costello and got Williams to ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles had the go-ahead run on second with one out before Trey Cobb came out of the bullpen and got out of the jam, and Cobb again worked out of trouble again in the seventh to strand a runner on third.
ORU would finally get to Cobb in the eighth, however. Following back-to-back singles by Matt Whatley and Rolando Martinez, a wild pitch moved the runners up. Cobb then got Brandy to fly out to shallow right field, but Sequeira stepped up and delivered the game-winning double into the gap to give the home team a 4-2 advantage.
The Cowboys tried to mount a rally in their final at bat, but following consecutive one-out singles by Williams and Corey Hassel to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, Sequeira retired the next two hitters to end the threat.
Arakawa and Williams combined for five of OSU's seven hits in the contest, with Arakawa going 3-for-4 and Williams collecting a pair of hits in four at-bats.
Cobb took the loss to fall to 2-1 after Costello worked 5 1/3 innings and struck out four.
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowboys open a series against Texas at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Friday's opener is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
