Dieringer, Crutchmer Head to Semifinals

ST. LOUIS - Oklahoma State wrestlers Alex Dieringer and Kyle Crutchmer earned spots in the semifinals of the NCAA DI Wrestling Championships on Friday morning at the Scottrade Center.
After session three, OSU is in seventh place with six Cowboys still wrestling.
"You hope for a better round, but they're tough rounds," coach John Smith said. "Even the matches we won were tough. You wish you could change a few things, but you can't. For this team it's about coming back tonight and building All-Americans. I think there's some growth going on with our team. I like that we're in a position with six guys (remaining). Let's take some All-Americans home."
Securing the first Cowboy spot in the semifinals was top-seeded 165 pounder Alex Dieringer, who picked up his third bonus-point win of the tournament. The national champion scored four takedowns, two three-point nearfalls, one reversal and one escape en route to his 18-6 major decision over No. 9 Jackson Morse of Illinois in the quarterfinals. The win gave Dieringer his third-consecutive All-America honor. He will face No. 5 seed Bo Jordan of Ohio State in the semifinals on Friday night.
Kyle Crutchmer became the second semifinalist for the Pokes, receiving his first All-America honor. Seeded 12th, Crutchmer faced Oregon State's Joe Latham in the 174-pound quarterfinals. Latham opened scoring with an escape in the second, but Crutchmer earned a takedown that period, ultimately giving him the edge as he walked away with a 5-2 win. He will see No. 8 Tyler Wilps of Pittsburgh in a Southern Scuffle rematch in session four.
Unseeded at 157 pounds, Anthony Collica stayed alive in the consolation bracket, going 2-0 in session three with both wins coming over seeded opponents. In his first match of the day, Collica defeated No. 16 Aaron Walker from the Citadel with an 8-4 decision. He later secured a spot in the blood round, overpowering No. 9 Joey LaVallee of Missouri, 5-2.
Eddie Klimara, seeded seventh, was sent to the back end of the bracket after a quarterfinals loss to Zeke Moisey at 125 pounds. Klimara was not able to overcome the Mountaineer's pair of takedowns and fell, 5-2.
No. 14 Dean Heil dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 11 Chris Mecate of Old Dominion in the 141-pound quarterfinals. The bout was tied, 3-3, at the end of regulation but riding time advantage gave Mecate the win.
Returning All-American and No. 4 seed Austin Marsden was edged by No. 5 Connor Medberry in the heavyweight quarterfinals. The two were deadlocked, 1-1, after regulation and the first sudden victory period. Marsden scored a reversal in the first tiebreaker period to go up 3-1, but two eventual escapes from the Badger sent the match to a second sudden victory. Medberry was later awarded a takedown after a coaches' review and took the win.
Gary Wayne Harding won his first match of the day, defeating Mark Grey of Cornell, 6-1, before falling to AJ Schopp in the third round of consolations. The Collinsville, Okla., native wraps up his true freshman campaign 2-2 at the NCAA championships and 30-12 overall.
Nolan Boyd was also knocked out of the tournament at 184 pounds. The sophomore finishes the season with a 26-9 record.
Six Cowboys return to action tonight at 7 p.m. with the championships semifinals and the consolation quarterfinals.
