ST. LOUIS - Four Oklahoma State wrestlers earned All-America status on Friday, with Cowboy Alex Dieringer advancing to the 165-pound finals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships, marking the sixth-straight year that the Pokes have sent a wrestler to the finals.
The Cowboys moved into seventh place of the team race with 55.5 points.
"Well we kind of split matches. We won half again and lost half," coach John Smith said. "That always makes for a good day and a bad day. It's good to have four All-Americans and all four of them returning next year. That's a positive. Our goal going in (to the session) was to get all six. I think the matches that we did get beat - and I didn't see Marsden's match - but there was no offense ... On the good side, Dieringer's going for his second championship and Dean Heil's plugging along, which is a positive. Eddie Klimara broke through finally and won a big match. He lost to that kid earlier in the season and ended up taking him down and pinning him."
For the second year in a row, three-time All-American Dieringer will make an appearance in the NCAA finals. He picked up his 48th-straight win on Friday night in the 165-pound semifinals, where he met up with fifth-ranked Bo Jordan of Ohio State. The Cowboy scored a takedown in the first and rode out the Buckeye. He followed it with a takedown in the second and Jordan earned the escape. To start the third, Dieringer got an escape and went on to win it 6-1 with riding time. He will seek his second-consecutive national title when he takes on No. 6 Taylor Walsh of Indiana in the finals on Saturday night.
"I wrestled decent. I was conservative," Dieringer said. "I respect his top game too much. But he's a good competitor and it made I to the finals, so I can't be mad about it."
Sophomore Kyle Crutchmer gave a valiant effort in the 174-pound semifinals, taking No. 8 Tyler Wilps from Pittsburgh to overtime after the bout was tied 1-1 at the end of the third period. Wilps took a shot late in the sudden victory period and scored the takedown, nipping Crutchmer, 3-1. Crutchmer will wrestle in the consolations on Saturday, looking to finish third.
Redshirt freshman Dean Heil became an All-American in his first NCAA appearance. Seeded 14th, Heil took out his second ranked opponent at the event, producing a 9-5 decision over No. 8 Geo Martinez in a 141-pound consolation match. He later went on to wrestle another top-10 opponent in No. 7 Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers, who he handily defeated 9-4. Heil will continue to wrestle for third place on Saturday.
Junior Eddie Klimara earned his first All-America honor on Friday night in impressive fashion. Klimara took on fifth-seeded Sean Boyle of Chattanooga in the 125-pound blood round, where he scored an early takedown. It wasn't long before he was awarded back points and stuck Boyle, ending the match in just 27 seconds. In his second match of the night, the Cowboy suffered a 3-2 loss to Michigan's Conor Youtsey. He will wrestle for seventh place on Saturday morning.
At 157 pounds, Anthony Collica finished his sophomore season, losing a 6-3 bout that went to a second tiebreaker period against No. 12 Mitch Minotti of Lehigh. He went 3-2 at his second NCAA tournament and put up a 26-11 overall record.
Also wrapping up his season, was Austin Marsden, who fell just shy of All-American status on Friday, dropping a 2-1 bout to No. 10 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech. Marsden went 27-4 his junior season.
Four Cowboys will continue action on Saturday, with Klimara, Heil and Crutchmer in the wrestlebacks and Dieringer in the finals.
