Cowboys in Third, Pick Up Crucial Upsets

ST. LOUIS - Five Oklahoma State wrestlers punched tickets to Friday's quarterfinals after a big session that also surged the Cowboys to third place in the team race of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
"I think the whole day was a good day considering what we had and where our seeds were and with what we'd done throughout the year," coach John Smith said. "It's a competitive tournament. We're seeing some lopsided victories and low seeds going down against high seeds or no seeds. Tomorrow gets tougher. Each and every day gets tougher. We just focus on what we've got to do and recognize that if we're going to win matches, we're going to have to win tough matches."
A pair of upsets helped the Cowboys thrive on Thursday night with big wins coming from No. 14 Dean Heil at 141 pounds and No. 12 Kyle Crutchmer at 174 pounds.
Heil avenged two regular season losses on Thursday night, upsetting No. 3-seed Lavion Mayes in a 3-1 thriller. The two each scored just an escape by the end of regulation, but a takedown in sudden victory gave Heil the edge and a spot in the quarterfinals.
"It was a good match, a good upset," Heil said. "Right now, it's all about preparing myself for tomorrow. This is only the second match, and if you want to win a national championship, you have to win five matches. We're not even halfway there yet. So as of right now, I'm working to get mentally prepared for tomorrow."
At 174 pounds, Crutchmer met up with fifth-seeded Blaise Butler of Virginia. The Cowboy opened scoring with an escape in the second and went on to score two takedowns in the final period to seal the victory.
Earning his second pin of the day was No. 1 Alex Dieringer at 165 pounds, sticking North Carolina State's Max Rohskopf in 4:18. On the day, Dieringer scored 30 points, collectively, before pinning his opponents.
Heavyweight Austin Marsden added more bonus points for the squad with a major decision win over 13th-ranked Tyler Deuel of Binghamton. The junior had a slow start with a 2-1 lead after the first period but kicked it up in the final two periods to walk away with a 12-4 win.
Also advancing in the championship bracket was Eddie Klimara, who was the first quarterfinalist for the Pokes. He was just shy of bonus points in his easy 8-1 triumph over No. 10 Ronnie Rios of Oregon State.
Anthony Collica and Nolan Boyd fell in tough second-round matches and will join Gary Wayne Harding in the second round of consolation matches on Friday morning.
Session of the tournament begins at 10 a.m. at the Scottrade Center.
