ST. LOUIS - Oklahoma State is in eighth place after the first session of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, with seven wrestlers advancing to the round of 16.
The Cowboys earned nine team points and are just 4.5 points behind first place, Ohio State.
"Tough session. Where we were placed, we had tough matches," coach John Smith. "In a couple matches I thought we could do a little bit more, but overall I thought it was pretty good effort. Several guys wrestled (at NCAAs) for the first time. Dean Heil and Kyle Crutchmer, it was good to see those guys pick up wins. As we go into the second round, we're going to have to wrestle a little bit more aggressive, continue to score and maybe stretch the scores out when we have an opportunity. We have some really tough matches. It's going to be real important that we're ready to compete."
Seventh-seeded Eddie Klimara led the Pokes to their first win of the day, defeating Trey Andrews of Northern Colorado with 9-4 decision at 125 pounds.
Freshman Dean Heil, the 14 seed at 141 pounds, made his NCAA debut with a win over Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin, 9-3.
At 157 pounds, Anthony Collica picked up his eighth-straight win, cruising past Brown's Justin Staudenmayer, 8-2.
National champion Alex Dieringer put up the first bonus points for the Cowboys, ending his match in the second period, sticking SIUE's Connor McMahon in 4:33.
Kyle Crutchmer also made his debut at the event, wrestling at 174 pounds. In his first match, the Cowboy edged Navy's Jaeden Bernstein, 5-3.
Continuing the Cowboys' winning ways was sophomore and 12th-seeded Nolan Boyd, who met up with Lelund Weatherspoon of Iowa State, who he defeated in the Big 12 finals on March 7. Boyd edged the Cyclone in his first NCAA tournament win, 4-3.
All-American and fourth-seeded Austin Marsden wrapped up a solid first session for the Cowboys as he defeated Jared Johnson, 6-1.
Returning NCAA finalist Josh Kindig drew No. 3 seed David Habat of Edinboro in his first match. Coming off of injury, the Cowboy senior fell in a 7-0 decision.
Gary Wayne Harding, a true freshman for the Pokes, was also sent to the wrestlebacks after a 9-3 loss to No. 16 Mack McGuire at 133 pounds.
Session two begins at 6 p.m. CT with the championship round of 16 and the pigtails and first round of consolation.
"It was tough matches. We're going to need to post some upsets," Smith said. "This is the kind of round whether you have a pretty good tournament or where you may go backwards. I think it's important that we come back and really fight tonight and be ready for tougher matches."
