Teeters, Edwards Finish Runner-Up at NCAA Championships
March 14, 2015 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -Oklahoma State had two runners-up, including Kaela Edwards in the women's 800 meters and John Teeters in the men's 60-meters dash, and another top-five finish Saturday at the final day of the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Edwards' second-place finish came in a personal best time of 2:03.59 and ranks as the second fastest in school history. She improved on her third place finish in the event a year ago and became the fifth Cowgirl ever to score in consecutive NCAA Indoor Championships.
"I wanted to improve on what I did last year and I came out, got a new PR and finished one place higher, so I'm just really happy with how it went," Edwards said. "I did what I always do, I ended up in the back, but I always kick at the end. I was a little tired, but I thought that I had to go and do whatever I could with what I had left."
She is just the second Cowgirl in school history to earn first team All-America honors twice in the 800 meters.
"Kaela Edwards is inching her way toward that national championship," coach Dave Smith said. "She was third last year, second this year and I think good things are to come for her."
In the 60-meter final, John Teeters scored at a national meet for the first time in his career. Teeters ran a blazing 6.54 and finished second, becoming the only Cowboy in school history to place in the 60-meter dash at an NCAA indoor meet. His finish earned the Cowboys eight team points.
"I obviously wanted to win it, but when you run a 6.54, it's the second best, you execute and someone runs a 6.52, it's just not your day," Teeters said. "I'm more happy with the fact that I gave it my all and I can't be mad at my performance. It's something to build on for outdoor season."
The men's mile final featured two-time Big 12 Champion Chad Noelle in his first NCAA mile final. The decorated middle-distance runner snagged a fifth place finish with a time of 4:04.36.
"The competition was unreal," Noelle said. "In the last 1,000 meters they equaled the college record for the open 1,000. You don't see that very often - it was probably the best field ever."
Noelle picked up four points for the Cowboys and received first team All-America honors for the first time in his career. He is the fourth Cowboy in school history to be named first team All-America in the mile and the second under coach Smith.
"Today went as well as it could have gone after yesterday. I'm really proud of the way that the kids competed." Smith said. "They really got out there and went for it."
Big 12 Champion Fabian Clarkson earned second team All-America honors for the first time at an NCAA Indoor Championships in the men's 3,000 meter run. He finished 15th with a time of 8:11.37.
Clarkson's honors gives the Cowboy track and field team its fifth consecutive 3,000 meter All-American - the longest streak in any event in Cowboy history.
Chase Ealey made her NCAA Championships debut Saturday in the women's shot put. She became the first Cowgirl in school history to compete in the event at an indoor national meet. Ealey's throw of 15.51m/50-10.75 landed her in 16th place and earned the six-time All-Big 12 junior second team All-America honors.
The OSU men's team wrapped up the meet in 13th place and earned its third straight top-15 finish at an NCAA Indoor Championships. The women's team finished 28th.
