Cowgirls Fall in Big 12 Opener

STILLWATER - No. 10 Oklahoma State women's tennis team had its undefeated home streak snapped on Friday night as the Cowgirls fell to No. 8 Baylor, 4-0, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
OSU is now 12-3 on the season with a 0-1 mark in conference competition.
"We had our chance to win the doubles point, but we didn't play well," coach Chris Young said. "We didn't do what we needed to do. We didn't respond in singles. I give Baylor credit. They played really well. I think it's up to us to take the experience from today and get ready to go tomorrow against Texas. We'll learn from it and become a better team."
The doubles point was tightly contested as Baylor just edged the Cowgirls.
The Bears took the match on court two, 6-2. At the No. 3-spot, Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez paired up, where they defeated the Generette/Van Zyl duo, 6-2. The decision came down to court one where No. 7 Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente took on No. 10 Burgic and Shankle. With the two teams trading games, the Bears brought the set to 5-5 and won the next two games to seal the doubles point.
In singles, Baylor continued a strong performance, winning on three courts to close out the match.
The Bears went up 2-0 after a win on court five as Cowgirl sophomore Tur Mari lost in two sets to Kelley Anderson, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 78 Laurente fell on court two to 31st-ranked Blair Shankle. The Cowgirl won four games in the first set but was eventually outlasted by the Bear, 6-4, 6-0.
The match was sealed at the No. 4-spot as freshman Vladica Babic dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Leolia JeanJean. It was only her second loss of the spring.
Play on courts one, three and six was not finished. On court six, Alvarez was just serves away from giving the Cowgirls a team point as she led Theresa Van Zyl, 6-2, 5-2.
The Cowgirls continue Big 12 play tomorrow, facing No. 54 Texas at 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
