Final Score: Texas Tech 63, Oklahoma State 62
Game Notes
► Freshman point guard Tyree Griffin was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time. He was joined in the starting five by Phil Forte, Jeff Newberry, Le'Bryan Nash and Michael Cobbins. Griffin finished with 10 points, the most he's had in a Big 12 game this year.
► Oklahoma State shut down Texas Tech's offense for most of the first half, but the vibe of the game changed dramatically when TTU got hot to close out the half. The Red Raiders converted only three of their first 20 attempts from the field (.150 pct.), but connected on seven of their last eight field goal attempts to close out the half on an 11-0 run and to take a 31-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
► Oklahoma State's 17 first-half points were the fewest scored by the Cowboys in a half this season.
► Texas Tech outrebounded OSU, 20-13, in the first half and grabbed eight offensive rebounds that resulted in eight second-chance points.
► Le'Bryan Nash was forced to the bench after picking up his second foul with 11:07 left in the first half. The score at the time was 8-8. OSU was able to weather the storm without its top scorer, as he was reinserted into the game with 5:57 left and the score tied at 10.
► The Cowboys turned the tables to start the second half. After trailing by as many as 15 points early in the second half, the Pokes went on a 9-0 run and extended it to a 14-2 run to trim the Texas Tech advantage to 38-36 with 13:01 left. OSU seized the lead at 48-47 after Jeffrey Carroll knocked down a three-pointer with 8:05 left.
► The two teams exchanged blows from that point, but following a pair of free throws by Devaughtah Williams, Tech opened up a 60-56 lead with 1:07 remaining. Le'Bryan Nash made a free throw, but missed the second, only to have Michael Cobbins get the offensive rebound and then get fouled. Cobbins sunk both free throws to cut TTU's lead to 60-59. The Cowboys forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and then Jeffrey Carroll sunk his fourth three-pointer of the game with 18 seconds left to give OSU a 62-60 lead. Williams answered with a three-pointer of his own with 10 seconds left to give the Red Raiders a one-point lead. OSU had a chance to win the game, but Carroll missed a three-pointer in the corner at the buzzer.
► Jeffrey Carroll enjoyed the most meaningful performance of his career to date, scoring 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field. Entering Saturday, he had a total of two points scored against Big 12 opponents this season and hadn't made a three-pointer since December 16.
► Michael Cobbins recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. His top three scoring outputs in Big 12 play have come in the last three games. This was his first double-double of the season and the second of his career.
► Phil Forte finished with no points on 0-for-4 shooting from the field. It was only the fourth scoreless game of his career. Entering Saturday, he averaged 16.2 points per game in his career vs. Texas Tech and had converted on 23-of-45 attempts from three-point range against the Red Raiders over the span of his career (.511 pct.) He drained five-of-seven from beyond the arc when the two teams met in Stillwater earlier this year.
