Cowboy Wrestling Dual Season Recap
February 27, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
The most decorated program in wrestling history entered the 2014-15 season with more questions than answers.
Several young faces and some wide-open spots came in to the Oklahoma State lineup, setting the Cowboys up for an unpredictable season.
Despite a youthful team and one of the toughest schedules in college wrestling, OSU Cowboys (12-3 overall, 3-0 Big 12) saw numerous highs including an upset of No. 5 Penn State.
With the dual tied, 18-18, heavyweight Austin Marsden battled Jon Gingrich through regulation and into two tiebreaker periods. Marsden walked away with a 4-3 victory, while the Cowboys overcame two pins to pull off a 21-18 win against the four-time defending national champs.
OSU finished the dual season 3-0 in conference play, taking down in-state rival Oklahoma, 25-9, and No. 8 Iowa State.
The Cowboys won six of the ten bouts against the Cyclones and left Ames, Iowa, as victors 20-15.
Top-ranked Alex Dieringer knocked off No. 4 Mike Moreno with a 13-3 major decision, proving he could handle his advancement to 165 pounds.
The returning national champion remains undefeated, 24-0, and continues to make a statement.
While a hard fought and well-earned dual season comes to a close for the Oklahoma State wrestling squad, the road to NCAA Championships has just begun.
First stop for the Cowboys is the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa, on March 7.
The Cowboys are a team with raw talent and are ready to take on the toughest part of the college wrestling season.
