February 21, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
TULSA – The No. 13 Oklahoma State women's tennis team defeated the No. 35 Tulsa Golden Hurricane for the first time since 2006 this evening at the Case Tennis Center, 4-3.
The Cowgirls (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell to an early 1-0 deficit, losing the doubles point, but fought their way back to earn their eighth win of the season and sixth over a ranked opponent.
Freshman Vladica Babic surged her way to her sixth victory of the spring on court four, quieting Marcelina Cichon, 6-1, 6-1. The win tied the team score, 1-1.
OSU took its first lead of the day after a win on court three and never looked back.
No. 110 Katarina Adamovic stormed back to defeat Yelena Nemchen after dropping the first set, 6-4. She went on to win the second set, 6-2, and shut down the Hurricane in the third set, 6-0.
On court five, sophomore Carla Tur Mari added to the Cowgirl lead, taking out Saana Saarteinen in straight sets, 7-6(7), 6-4.
Tulsa earned wins on courts six and two, respectively, to tie it back up at 3-3. Maria Alvarez won her first set at the No. 6-spot, 6-4, but Renata Kuricova took the match, winning the next two sets. No. 58 Kelsey Laurente lost a tough one to No. 100 Rongrong Leenabanchong in three sets, 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-4.
Sophomore All-American and 11th-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova clinched the match for the Pokes, taking down Ksenia Laskutova. The Cowgirl won the first set, 6-3, but Laskutova forced a third; however, it did not slow down Lushkova as she went on to take the final set, 7-5.
“We definitely did not play well today, but this group continues to find a way to win,” coach Chris Young said. “I thought Tulsa played aggressively and challenged us at every spot. I look forward to getting back on the practice court this week and preparing for our home matches on Friday and Bedlam on Sunday.”
OSU returns to action next weekend, hosting Oral Roberts and SMU on Friday, before traveling to Norman, Okla., to take on in-state rival, OU.
