Cowboys Ride In Super Bowl XLIX
February 01, 2015 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - A pair of Oklahoma State products competed on the biggest stage in American sports as members of the Seattle Seahawks, as Russell Okung (OSU, 2006-09) and Kevin Williams (OSU, 1999-2002) both figured prominently in the Seahawks' game against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday. A third Oklahoma State product, Ryan Robinson, is a defensive end on the Seahawks' practice squad.
Both Okung and Williams started in the game. For Okung, it was his second straight Super Bowl appearance and for Williams, it was the first of his career. Okung helped pave the way for a Seattle offense that averaged 5.6 yards per rush and 7.5 yards per play in the game. Williams made three tackles.
Williams spent the first 11 years of his professional career with the Minnesota Vikings and joined the Seahawks as a free agent prior to this season. Okung was the sixth overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft and has spent each of his five seasons as a pro with the Seahawks.
Okung, an NFL Pro Bowler and Seahawks Man of the Year in 2012, has been a central figure for Seattle for some time. Williams, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, was one of the faces of the Vikings during his illustrious career in Minneapolis, but never had a chance at a Super Bowl until joining the Seahawks this year.
Okung was a unanimous All-American at Oklahoma State in 2009 and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy presented to the nation's top interior lineman his senior year. Williams was a first-team All-Big 12 honoree in 2002.
The Super Bowl has been played 49 times. In more than half of those games (28, to be exact), at least one Oklahoma State player has been on the roster of a participating team.
In 2013, an all-time OSU-high four former Cowboys were on Super Bowl rosters, with Billy Bajema and Ryan McBean on the Baltimore Ravens and Kendall Hunter and Perrish Cox on the San Francisco 49ers.
Overall, 26 former Cowboys have been on a Super Bowl roster, including Jon Kolb (Pittsburgh) and Thurman Thomas (Buffalo), who each played in four Super Bowls.
2015 marked the fifth time that more than one OSU player was on the roster of a Super Bowl team.
