Oklahoma State Among Nation’s Best In Bowl Games
December 27, 2015 | Cowboy Football
NEW ORLEANS – Oklahoma State has long been successful in bowl games.
In fact, a win over Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day would improve the Cowboys to 17-9 all-time in bowl games (65.3 pct). Among teams with a minimum of 20 bowl trips, only USC has a higher bowl game winning percentage, with the Trojans winning at a 66.0 percent clip.
This year's Sugar Bowl marks OSU's 10th-straight bowl trip (the 12th-longest active streak in the nation) and its fourth appearance in a game now referred to as a New Year's Six bowl since 2010, as the Pokes played in the 2010 Cotton Bowl, the 2012 Fiesta Bowl, the 2014 Cotton Bowl and now the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Cowboys have won four of their last five bowl games and are 6-3 in the postseason under coach Mike Gundy.
The complete rundown of Gundy-Era bowl results is as follows:
2006 Independence Bowl vs. Alabama – W, 34-31
2007 Insight Bowl vs. Indiana – W, 49-33
2008 Holiday Bowl vs. Oregon – L, 31-42
2010 Cotton Bowl vs. Mississippi – L, 7-21
2010 Alamo Bowl vs. Arizona – W, 36-10
2012 Fiesta Bowl vs. Stanford – W, 41-38 (OT)
2012 Heart of Dallas Bowl vs. Purdue – W, 58-14
2014 Cotton Bowl vs. Missouri – L, 31-41
2015 Cactus Bowl vs. Washington – W, 30-22
This year marks the Cowboys' second visit to the Allstate Sugar Bowl stage. In the first, Oklahoma State (then Oklahoma A&M) capped its undefeated 1945 season with a 33-13 win over St. Mary's.
OSU's 1946 Sugar Bowl win was one of the most significant bowl victories in school history, joining a 34-0 win over TCU in the 1945 Cotton Bowl, a 16-6 win over BYU in the 1974 Fiesta Bowl and a 41-38 triumph over Stanford in the 2012 Fiesta Bowl.
While those were all high-profile wins, one of the most memorable bowl showings from Oklahoma State came in the 1988 Holiday Bowl, where the Cowboys handed Wyoming a 62-14 beating. In that contest, Gundy completed 20-of-24 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns and freshly-minted Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders carried 29 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns.
Sanders' Holiday Bowl showing is the gold standard for an individual rushing performance in OSU's bowl history, but it should be noted that he is not the only Oklahoma State star to have shined in a bowl game. A look:
This year's Oklahoma State squad features a standout performer in first-team All-America defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, who will look to add his name to that list of big-time Cowboys who starred in bowl games. He'll also look to help his team write a new chapter in OSU's bowl history.
A history that has seen more than its share of success for a long period of time.

- Bob Fenimore rushed for 178 yards in the 1945 Cotton Bowl and for 125 yards in the 1946 Sugar Bowl.
- Thurman Thomas turned in 150-yard rushing efforts in both the 1984 Gator Bowl (155 yards) and in the 1987 Sun Bowl (157 yards).
- Rashaun Woods caught 11 passes for 223 yards against Ole Miss in the 2004 Cotton Bowl.
- Justin Blackmon turned in 100-yard receiving games in both the 2010 Alamo Bowl and in the 2012 Fiesta Bowl.
- Dez Bryant caught 13 passes in barely more than three quarters of action in the 2008 Holiday Bowl before an injury knocked him out of the game early in the fourth quarter.
- Brandon Weeden passed for 399 yards in the 2012 Fiesta Bowl.
