November 07, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
NEW YORK CITY – Former Oklahoma State wrestling standout Jordan Oliver won the 65-kilogram title at the 2015 Bill Farrell International Open on Saturday at the New York Athletic Club.
Oliver made his way to the 65kg finals by way of three solid wins. The two-time NCAA champion for the Pokes started his tournament run with a 5-2 win over Russia's Rustam Ampsr. He followed it up with another 5-2 win, this time over American Nazar Kulchytskyy, which pushed him to the semifinals. There, he met up with former NCAA champion for Penn State Frank Molinaro. Oliver scored the only two takedowns in the match while Molinaro gathered four one-point moves. Oliver's takedowns gave him the edge and the win at the end of regulation with the scored tied 4-4.
In the finals, Oliver went toe-to-toe with four-time NCAA champ of Ohio State Logan Stieber. The former Buckeye got off to a quick start, holding a 5-2 lead over the Cowboy entering the second period. Oliver responded with a takedown early in the second to cut Stieber's lead to one. With just 20 seconds left, Oliver was awarded four points for a feet-to-back takedown, which ultimately secured him the win.
OSU All-American Cayle Byers picked up a third-place finish at the event, defeating Enock Francois in his final bout, 4-2. Byers trailed 2-0 heading into the second period, but put up four unanswered points to win the match.
Earlier in the day, Byers had a solid performance, winning his first match by fall and his second match by technical fall before being knocked down to the consolation bracket, where he fought his way onto the podium.
Other former Pokes who competed at the tourney were Obe Blanc (57 kg), Tyler Caldwell (86 kg) and Clayton Foster (86 kg). OSU club coach Frank Perrelli also competed at 57 kilos.
