Gundy A Semifinalist For National Coach of the Year
November 20, 2015 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy is one of 18 semifinalists for the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award presented by the Maxwell Football Club, it was announced today.
Gundy is also on the watch list for two other national coach of the year awards – the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award and the Bobby Dodd Trophy.
Gundy has led the Cowboys to a 10-0 record and a No. 4 ranking in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls. The Cowboys were unranked to start the season and picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 in the preseason media poll.
Three times this year has Gundy coached Oklahoma State to wins despite facing deficits of 15 points or more. He has coached the Cowboys to a 7-0 record in their last seven games that were decided by one score, dating back to last year.
A former quarterback himself with an offensive background as both a player and as a coach, Gundy has gone against convention and made a two-quarterback system work spectacularly this season. Mason Rudolph ranks 11th nationally in passing yards and eighth nationally in yards per pass attempt. J.W. Walsh is responsible for 120 points despite having only 78 total offense attempts (1.54 points responsible for per total offense attempt).
Additionally, this year's team has a school-record 22 recipients of Academic All-Big 12 honors for outstanding performance in the classroom.
Earlier this week, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Jimmy Burch wrote that Gundy was his pick for Big 12 Coach of the Year.
