November 01, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
ATLANTA – Cowboy wrestling All-Americans Dean Heil and Kyle Crutchmer fell in their season-opening bouts at the 2015 NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday in Atlanta.
Heil, who finished fourth at 141 pounds at the 2015 NCAA Championships, took on 133-pound NCAA champion Cody Brewer of the University of Oklahoma in an action-packed 141-pound bout.
With only seconds remaining in the first period, Brewer struck first with a takedown, which was worth three points due to an experimental rule for the event. After tallying an escape to start the second, Heil took the lead with a takedown to bring the score to 4-3. The two continued to exchange points and Heil held a 12-10 lead with 20 seconds left in the match while Brewer worked on a takedown. The Sooner made his move with just seconds left to edge out the Cowboy, 13-12, with a takedown.
The Cowboy sophomore ended the match with three takedowns against the reigning NCAA champion.
NCAA fifth-place finisher Crutchmer faced Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech in the 174-pound match.
After a scoreless first period, Crutchmer began the second on bottom with a chance to put the first point on the board, which he did, picking up an escape. Epperly tied the score in similar fashion to start the third period. Shortly after, Crutchmer was pegged with a stall warning. With 13 seconds left in the match, both wrestlers were hit with a stall call, which was Crutchmer's second, giving Epperly a point, the lead and eventually the win.
The top-ranked Cowboys open the season on Nov. 14, when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to face the No. 4 Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium.
