Sinor Named Candidate for 2015 Ray Guy Award
October 30, 2015 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State punter Zach Sinor has been named a candidate for the 2015 Ray Guy Award, the Augusta Sports Council announced Friday.
Sinor is one of just seven freshmen in the country who made the list, which also features 31 seniors, 25 juniors and 16 sophomores.
A Castroville, Texas native, Sinor has handled all of OSU's punting duties this season, averaging 40.8 yards on 36 punts. He has a career-long of 65 yards and has impressively downed opponents inside their 20-yard line 15 times this year with only two touchbacks.
For his season-best performance at West Virginia, Sinor was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week and the OSU Special Team Player of the Game. On a night when yards and good field position were hard to come by, Sinor had a huge impact on the Cowboys' victory. He punted eight times for an average of 44.9 yards, with three of his punts downed inside the Mountaineer 20-yard line. He did his best work in the fourth quarter, hampering the WVU cause with punts of 49 yards, 52 yards and 50 yards on his last three strikes. For the game, Sinor's eight punts resulted in just three punt return yards for West Virginia.
The Ray Guy Award is given annually to the best punter in the nation. The Cowboys have a history with the award, as Matt Fodge won it in 2008.
The 2015 list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists to be announced on Nov. 13. Following the semifinalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be names on Nov. 23. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.
The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 10.
