In the Polls
Unranked to start the season, Oklahoma State has climbed to No. 12 in the Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the Amway Coaches poll this week. Texas Tech is unranked. The Cowboys have achieved a top 15 national ranking by the AP in seven of the last eight seasons. Since 2008, OSU has been ranked in the AP poll in 72 of its last 97 games.
Â
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Undefeated through seven games, Oklahoma State controls its own destiny in the Big 12 title race and also for a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Cowboys are one of only four teams from Power Five conferences who rank in the top 25 nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense, joining Ohio State, Clemson and North Carolina. The Cowboys own a nine-game winning streak that dates back to last season and have accomplished it by winning close games, disrupting opposing offenses and by employing a unique brand of quarterback play.               Â
OSU is coming off an overwhelming 58-10 win over Kansas last week, but prior to that blowout, each of OSU's previous four Big 12 conference games dating back to last season were decided by seven points or less - and all of them resulted in Cowboy victories.
For evidence of the disruptive power of OSU's defense, look no further than the fact that the Cowboys lead the Big 12 in scoring defense, total defense, rush defense, red zone defense, sacks and tackles for loss. Leading the disruptive charge for OSU are defensive ends Emmanuel Ogbah and Jimmy Bean, whose 13.5 combined sacks matches the highest total for any duo in the country.
In Mason Rudolph and J.W. Walsh, Oklahoma State has two very effective quarterbacks who both play crucial roles in the team's success. Rudolph ranks 11th nationally with 313.9 passing yards per game, and he does it by spreading the ball around to a wide variety of receivers and by using the entire field. Rudolph ranks among the top 20 quarterbacks nationally in both yards per attempt and yards per completion. As for Walsh, he has 45 plays of total offense this season (rushes + pass attempts). Those 45 plays have resulted in 78 points for the Cowboys. Walsh accounted for five touchdowns against Kansas last week on 11 total offense plays - he found the end zone on three of his six rushing attempts and threw two touchdown passes on five attempts.
              Â
An Oklahoma State Win Would...
?Improve the Cowboys to 8-0, marking just the third time in school history that the Cowboys were undefeated after eight games. The previous occasions came as part of the two most successful seasons in school history - 1945 and 2011. The 1945 squad finished 9-0 and won the Sugar Bowl and the 2011 squad finished 12-1, won the Big 12 championship and missed out on a spot in the BCS national championship game by just 0.0086 of a point in the BCS computer system. The Cowboys of 2011 went on to beat Andrew Luck and No. 4 Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.
?Be the Cowboys' 10th consecutive win, dating back to last season, marking OSU's longest win streak since the Pokes rattled off 11 straight wins from Dec. 29, 2010 to Nov. 18, 2011. Ten straight wins would stand as the third-longest winning streak in school history. The Pokes won 13 straight from 1944-46 and 11 straight from 2010-11.
?Bring the Cowboys to 4-0 on the road this season and mark OSU's fifth straight road victory dating back to 2014. Five straight road wins would stand alone as the third-longest road win streak in school history. The Cowboys won 11 straight on the road from 1943-45 and won 10 straight on the road from 2010-11.
?Be the Cowboys' seventh straight over Texas Tech.
?Improve the Cowboys to 25-6 in their last 31 games played against teams from the state of Texas, dating back to 2009.
?Improve the Cowboys to 45-5 in their last 50 games against unranked opponents, dating back to 2010.
