STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wrestling had an eventful weekend as it hosted its 100 Year Celebration, held its first official practice and saw one of its alumni inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
The 100 Year Celebration weekend brought in fans and former Cowboys, including Alan Fried, Jordan Oliver and many others to gather and reflect on 100 years of Oklahoma State wrestling history. The Cowboys got together for a social on Friday night and a banquet on Saturday night.
Saturday marked the first official day of practice, and the Cowboys started strong wrestling live for several two-minute periods. Cowboy alumni like Kendall Cross, Alan Gelogaev and Chris Perry also got in on the action.
"I thought the first day of practice was good," coach John Smith said. "I don't think you're ever totally pleased when you look at the level of conditioning on the first day. There were some areas that we're definitely going to have to target moving forward, but I think we have a very competitive room. We have a lot of young bodies that need to learn a little more about wrestling. I think attitude is going to be the key moving forward."
Capping off the weekend was the Oklahoma state chapter inductions into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, where former Cowboy Mike Jones was honored with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award, an honor given annually to coaches, officials and contributors who have given a minimum of 20 years of service to the sport of wrestling.
The No. 1 Cowboys are ready to take down the 2015-16 season and will open their campaign at Iowa's Kinnick Stadium to take on the Hawkeyes on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m.
