No. 8 Oklahoma State Falls to Top-Ranked Iowa
January 11, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State's wrestling squad dropped a 30-7 match to the No. 1 Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys (3-2) tallied wins at 165 pounds and 184 pounds.
"In the end they were a better team than us, there's no question," coach John Smith said. "I knew going in that they were quite a bit better than us, but we made them look better than what they are. I'm not going to take anything from them, they're a good team. To put it this way, I don't think we're that bad of a team, and that's what we looked tonight."
Of OSU's 16 takedowns on the day, junior and NCAA champ Alex Dieringer accounted for nine of them.
Ranked No. 1 in the nation, the junior dominated Iowa's Patrick Rhoads with a 20-8 major decision at 165 pounds. It was the first win of the day for the Pokes and the only Cowboy win with bonus points. Dieringer improved to 16-0 on the season and remains the only wrestler on the squad with an undefeated record.
"Luckily it's still January," Dieringer said. "We've got a lot of work to do, but we've got to just get back to that Oklahoma State style. Keep attacking, attacking and staying broken down in your stance but going forward. I think if we do that then by March we'll be where we need to be."
At 184 pounds, No. 15 Nolan Boyd picked up his third win over a ranked opponent this season as he upset No. 7 Sammy Brooks, 9-6. Trailing the first half of the match, Boyd was awarded a takedown and three nearfall points to end the second period. He finished the match off with an escape to start the third period and a late takedown to seal the win.
"We were both kind of out there taking risks," Boyd said. "He went for an inside trip and he went for a belly-to-belly and I went for an inside leg wrap throw. We were kind of just out there going and when you go things happen, and it happened in my favor this time. We'll see each other again."
Despite the wins from Dieringer and Boyd, OSU fell into a 19-0 hole that was too much to overcome. The Cowboys gave up bonus points at 125, 141 and 184 pounds to put the dual out of reach.
All-Americans Josh Kindig (149) and Austin Marsden (285) each suffered their first losses of the season as No. 2 Kindig fell to No. 5 Brandon Sorenson, 6-1, and No. 4 Marsden was edged by top-ranked Bobby Telford, 4-3.
In the first dual match of his career, true freshman Gary Wayne Harding put up a fight against fifth-ranked Cory Clark but fell in a 10-5 decision at 133 pounds. No. 20 Dean Heil also had his upset-bid fall short against No. 8 Josh Dziewa, storming out to a 5-1 lead before getting caught on his back and pinned in the final 30 seconds of the match.
OSU will be back in Gallagher-Iba Arena for a full weekend, going head-to-head with West Virginia on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. and Pittsburgh on Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
