The Sunday Wrap - Missouri State
September 07, 2014 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State was a 40-23 winner over Missouri State in soggy Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday.
Particularly notable about the game was that OSU's special teams units blocked a punt, a field goal and a point-after attempt to mark only the second time in history that a team blocked all three forms of kicks (Oregon State did it against USC in 1996).
Quarterback Daxx Garman engineered six OSU scoring drives in his collegiate debut after entering the contest in the first quarter following an injury to starter J.W. Walsh.
Led by the defensive line, the Cowboy defense recorded five sacks and 12 tackles for loss in the contest. Linebacker Ryan Simmons logged seven tackles and defensive end Jimmy Bean contributed with 1.5 sacks.
In addition to blocking three kicks, OSU's special teams affected the game in other ways - kicker Ben Grogan made four field goals and Tyreek Hill returned a punt 37 yards.
Standouts vs. Missouri State
Offense: Daxx Garman, QB
After not taking a live snap since his junior year of high school in 2009, Daxx Garman stepped in for an injured J.W. Walsh during the first quarter of Oklahoma State's home opener against Missouri State on Sept. 6 and helped lead the Cowboys to a 40-23 victory by completing 16-of-26 passes for 244 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Garman was on the field for nine series, six of which resulted in scores, a seventh resulted in a missed field goal and the final two resulted in OSU losing the ball on downs and punting as it was attempting to run out the clock at the end of the fourth quarter.
Defense: The Defensive Line as a Group
Oklahoma State's defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage all game and accounted for eight of the Cowboys' 12 tackles for loss and four of OSU's five sacks in the contest. Defensive end Jimmy Bean logged 1.5 sacks, with fellow end Sam Wren contributing with four tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss. Defensive tackles James Castleman and Ofa Hautau both blocked a kick, with Castleman adding 1.5 tackles for loss.
Special Teams: Ben Grogan, K
With four field goals made in the contest, kicker Ben Grogan was a central figure in Oklahoma State's scoring efforts in its 40-23 win over Missouri State. Grogan's four field goals made stand as the second-most in school history and tied his previous career best. He connected on field goals of 37 yards, 19 yards, 34 yards and 36 yards. He attempted six field goals against the Bears to match a school record.
Notable End to a Streak
Oklahoma State entered last week's win over Missouri State riding a streak of 22 consecutive games with at least one turnover forced. Among schools in the Power Five conferences, only OSU and Missouri had forced at least one opponent turnover in 20 straight games or more. That streak came to an end against the Bears.
Bean has the Hot Hand
Junior defensive end Jimmy Bean has 6.5 tackles for loss in his last three games, two of which were against top-10 opponents (No. 9 Missouri in the 2014 Cotton Bowl and No. 1 Florida State in the Cowboys Classic). He has10 tackles for loss in his last six games. He is OSU's active leader with six career sacks. He is tied for second on the team with 13.0 career tackles for loss. After battling injuries early in his career, Bean has added about 15 pounds of muscle to his frame since arriving on campus and has positioned himself to be an important member of the defensive unit.
