Cowgirls Come Up Short At Arizona State
September 05, 2014 | Cowgirl Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. - A pair of second-half goals lifted Arizona State to a 2-0 win over Oklahoma State in the Sun Devil Classic Friday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, Oklahoma State dropped to 0-5-0 on the season. The Cowgirls entered the game without five starters and lost a sixth to injury early in the first half against ASU.
"We played (ASU) straight up for a half, and the kids who were on the field did a good job, did everything we asked them to do - they fought hard, they competed, they disrupted - and I felt like we just lacked a little bit of quality in the final third," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "In the second half, as you might imagine with our limited options, we started to tire a little bit and they created some more good looks.
"(ASU) is a good team, but our kids probably did about as well as we could and we gave ourselves a chance to win."
The teams played a scoreless first half, with ASU outshooting the Cowgirls, 6-2. Both goalies recorded a pair of saves.
But in the second half, the Sun Devils finally broke the scoreless streak.
Early on, OSU goalie Rosa Medina made a pair of spectacular diving saves to thwart ASU's attack, but in the 57th minute, the Sun Devils got on the board. Cali Farquharson delivered a shot that was saved by Medina, but the rebound went to Aly Moon, who tapped it in to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
ASU doubled its lead in the 66th minute. On a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, Lucy Lara blasted a shot that deflected off the OSU defensive wall and rolled past Medina to put the Sun Devils up, 2-0.
The Cowgirls had several scoring opportunities in the second half, recording seven shots after intermission, but ASU goalie Chandler Morris finished the match with five saves on OSU's nine shots.
Medina, who leads the Big 12 in saves, finished with eight against ASU to bring her season total to 30.
OSU returns to action Sunday when they close out tourney play against Arizona State at 12:30 p.m. (CST).
"The kids who are healthy and fit, we just keep preaching that all you can control is how hard you work and your mentality," Carmichael said. "We're gonna stay positive... we'll regroup and get ready for Sunday. We want to win, and whatever group we have on the field, we're gonna try our best to win.
