THE BASICS
The Oklahoma State football team (3-1 overall; 1-0 Big 12) caps its four-game home stand when it hosts Iowa State (1-3 overall; 0-2 Big 12) at 11 a.m. CT Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.

Oklahoma State is No. 21 in the current Associated Press poll and No. 23 in the Amway Coaches Poll. Iowa State is unranked. This week's game marks the 74th time in the last 90 weeks of college football that OSU has appeared in the top 25 of the AP poll, dating back to the 2008 season.

THE SERIES
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Iowa State, 27-18-3, including a 15-6-2 advantage in Stillwater. The Cowboys have won four of the last five meetings, including a 58-27 victory in Ames last year. OSU hasn't lost to Iowa State in Boone Pickens Stadium since 2000, when the Cyclones were 33-26 winners.

• The Cowboys have won 13 of their last 15 games against Big 12 opponents in Boone Pickens Stadium.
• Oklahoma State has won 25 straight home games over unranked opponents, dating back to 2009.
• Oklahoma State has scored 20 or more points in 56 consecutive games dating back to the start of the 2010 season. That streak is the longest active streak in the country and the second-longest since Division I split into the FBS/FCS in 1978, trailing only USC's 63 straight games of 20 or more points from Sept. 2, 2002 through Nov. 25, 2006.
• OSU has at least one touchdown drive of faster than two minutes in each of its last 39 games and in 55 of its last 56 contests.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING - OKLAHOMA STATE 58, IOWA STATE 27
Making the first start of his career, junior Desmond Roland rushed for 219 yards and four touchdowns and Oklahoma State scored two defensive touchdowns in beating Iowa State, 58-27 in Ames.
Clint Chelf made his first start at quarterback in two months and completed 10-of-26 passes for 78 yards on a wind-blown day, highlighted by an eight-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Moore. Chelf added a career-high 85 rushing yards on nine attempts.
The Cowboys forced three Cyclone turnovers, with cornerback Justin Gilbert taking an interception back for a 31-yard touchdown and defensive end Tyler Johnson scooping up a fumble that was forced by linebacker Joe Mitchell and returning it behind a convoy of blockers 54 yards for a touchdown.
OSU held a narrow 28-20 lead going into halftime, but scored 24 unanswered points coming out of the locker room to blow the game wide open.

OKLAHOMA STATE VS. UNRANKED OPPONENTS
Since the start of the 2010 season, Oklahoma State is 33-4 against teams not ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The Cowboys have won 25 straight home games over unranked opponents. The last unranked team to beat OSU in Boone Pickens Stadium was Houston in 2009.
Starting with the Cowboys' 2012 Heart of Dallas Bowl win over Purdue, OSU has won 11 of its last 12 overall against unranked opponents.
DEFENSIVE LINE CAUSING PROBLEMS
Oklahoma State ranks 11th nationally with eight tackles for loss per game, is 19th nationally with 3.25 sacks per game and is third nationally with three blocked kicks. What do those three areas all have in common? Defensive line play. The Cowboy defensive front is deep and it is talented.
As a group, the defensive line has combined to record 18.5 of OSU's 32 tackles for loss and 9.5 of OSU's 13 sacks to this point.
THIRD DOWN DEFENSE AN EARLY STRONG SUIT
Third down defense has been an area of strength for OSU, despite the fact that the Cowboys allowed Texas Tech to convert on 8-of-17 third down attempts last game in a contest that was a clear outlier in relation to the season trend in that area. The Cowboys enter the Iowa State game ranked third in the Big 12 and 22nd nationally by limiting opposing offenses to a 31.1 percent conversion rate on third down.
Perhaps the biggest reason is that OSU is consistently putting its opposition in third-and-long situations (seven yards or more). Of the 62 third-down plays that the Cowboys have defended this season, 38 were third-and-long situations, 10 were third-and-medium situations (four to six yards) and 14 were third-and-short situations (three yards or less).
FIRST DOWN DEFENSE
Another reason for Oklahoma State's success on third down is that the Cowboys are stuffing opposing offenses on first down and consequently putting them behind schedule.
Featuring a defense loaded with seniors in 2013, OSU limited opposing offenses to three yards or less on 249 of 453 first-down plays last year (.550 pct.) The Cowboys have actually improved in that area this year, holding opponents to three yards or less on 74 of 127 first-down plays (.583 pct.)
COWBOY DEFENSE MAKES OPPOSING QBS INTERCEPTION PRONE
Oklahoma State has intercepted six passes through four games, a mark that is third in the Big 12 and 19th nationally. Cornerback Ashton Lampkin and linebacker Seth Jacobs have two interceptions apiece, with cornerbacks Kevin Peterson and Ramon Richards both contributing with an interception of their own, as well.
PROTECTING THE BALL
The Oklahoma State offense dedicates a period of every practice to working on ball security and it appears that time is paying off. The Cowboys lead the Big 12 and rank 16th nationally in fewest turnovers committed with four. The Cowboys have lost only one fumble this year, a mark that ranks second in the Big 12 and 10th nationally.
