The Friday Wrap - Texas Tech
September 26, 2014 | Cowboy Football
Playing on a nationally-televised Thursday night stage, Oklahoma State used its down field passing attack and weathered a slow start to beat Texas Tech, 45-35.
The Red Raiders seemed in control in the first half, but failed to cash in with points, as the Cowboy defense intercepted two passes and forced two turnovers on downs to limit Tech to 14 first-half points despite the fact that the Red Raiders ran 61 plays and amassed 340 yards prior to halftime.
While Texas Tech was content to inch its way down the field by throwing short pass after short pass, Oklahoma State aired it out via the vertical passing game, with quarterback Daxx Garman averaging 22 yards per completion en route to passing for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Receivers Marcell Ateman (six catches for 130 yards) and James Washington (three catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns) were the primary beneficiaries of the down field passing game, but it wasn't until Garman connected with Tyreek Hill on a 50-yard scoring pass to give the Cowboys a two-touchdown advantage midway through the third quarter that the lead felt safe.

Standouts vs. Texas Tech
Offense
QB Daxx Garman | 6-2 | 205 | Junior | Southlake, Texas/Carroll/Arizona
Daxx Garman threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for a fifth touchdown in leading Oklahoma State to a 45-35 win over Texas Tech. Garman did his damage with the long ball, as nearly all of his completions came in the vertical passing game. He completed four passes of 40 yards or more and six passes of 30 yards or more and none of those long completions were of the catch-and-run variety, they were all down-the-field shots. He completed at least one pass of 20 yards or longer to six different receivers. Garman's five touchdowns were the most for a Cowboy signal-caller in a Big 12 game since Brandon Weeden threw five touchdown passes against Texas Tech in 2011. Garman's 21.8 yards per completion against the Red Raiders stands as the 10th-best mark in school history and the best since Zac Robinson averaged 21.9 yards per completion against Iowa State in 2008.
Defense
DE Jimmy Bean | 6-5 | 250 | Junior | Denton, Texas/Guyer
Jimmy Bean's disruptive play behind the line of scrimmage in clutch time was a prominent factor in Oklahoma State's win over Texas Tech. Bean did his best work in the fourth quarter, amassing four tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in the final 15 minutes alone to dash hopes of a Red Raider come-from-behind win. Overall, Bean finished with eight tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. His eight tackles were the most for an OSU defensive lineman since James Castleman had nine against Arizona early in the 2012 season. In four games this year, Bean has 17 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
