EUGENE, Ore. -
Oklahoma State's Monika Juodeskaite finished 20th in the women's 5,000 meters on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday.
Juodeskaite, who entered the postseason ranked No. 34 in the 5,000 meters, ran a 16:40.25 to take 20th, earning honorable mention All-American honors. She was also an All-American in cross country this season.
“Monika is a competitor, so she sees today as a disappointment like any competitor would,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “As a coach, I see the fact that she continued to outperform and improve on her rankings. She had really big goals, and it didn't go her way today. She is a great kid, and I want the best for her, which she didn't get today. She'll bounce back, though. Here in a couple days she'll be ready to start over again with cross country.”
On the men's side, the Cowboys finished in 13th place, with 16 team points. OSU wraps up an academic year in which they finished third in cross country, sixth in indoors and 13th in outdoors.
Coupled with Big 12 titles in cross country and indoor track & field and a third-place conference finish in outdoors, the Cowboys completed arguably the greatest combined cross country/track & field year in school history.
“This was definitely the best year in school history,” Smith said. “However, we can get better. This is two years in a row we have gone top-10 in cross country and indoors, but failed to do so in outdoors. Our goal is to go top-10 in all three, so we have to get better in outdoors. We have work to do to be a top-10 outdoor team. We had the bodies to do it this year, but we have to rely on a lot of the same people through cross country, indoors and outdoors, which can be a lot to ask. However, I'm proud of them. We'll finish up there with Oregon and Arkansas for program of the year, which is great. We'll regroup and hopefully go top-10 in all three next year.”
