STILLWATER, Okla. – "How I Got Here" is a series that asks Oklahoma State football players to detail their football background and careers and how they got to where they are now. Today's edition features receiver Austin Hays from San Antonio, Texas.
Receiver Austin Hays
On how he got into football
“I grew up with a ball in my hand. My dad played football, and my whole family loved sports, so it kind of came natural.”
On the person who most influenced his football career
“My dad probably had the biggest impact. He played football at Texas and he's been there for me the entire way. He taught me the game.”
On why he chose to play receiver
“I was a quarterback at first, and then I transitioned to receiver in high school. My dad played receiver, so again, I kind of wanted to play receiver.”
On what he likes most about playing receiver
“I get to catch the ball and run with it and score.”
On playing football with OU quarterback Trevor Knight in high school
“It's pretty cool actually. We've been best friends since preschool. We always thought we were going to go to Texas together – we were die-hard Texas fans. Now we're both in Oklahoma, and he loves OU and I love Oklahoma State. It's pretty awesome getting to play against him.”
