MADISON, Wisc. – Former Cowboy wrestler Jack Jensen and Oklahoma State club coaches Cayle Byers and Frank Perelli wrapped up day one of the World Team Trials in Madison, Wisc., on Saturday, representing OSU at 57 kilograms and 97 kg.
Former Cornell star Frank Perelli competed at 57 kilograms, where he was defeated in the first round by Brandon Precin. He was knocked out of the tournament in his second match of the day, falling to Dan Mitcheff in the back side of the bracket.
Byers turned some heads with his 6-4 quarterfinals win over two-time World Team member JD Bergman after pinning Cam Simaz in 4:36 in the first round. The Chugiak, Alaska, native met up with 2011 NCAA champion Dustin Kilgore, who he took to the very end of the match; however, Byers came up just short, losing by a 6-5 decision. In the consolation semifinals, Wynn Michalak bumped Byers from the tournament with a fall in 2:46.
Jensen was sent to the consolations after a first-round 8-0 loss to 2014 NCAA champion J'Den Cox. He was eventually taken out by Bergman later in the day.
Several more Cowboys will represent Oklahoma State in day two of competition, beginning on Sunday morning. Fans can keep up with the action with live results on trackwrestling.com or watch every match on flowrestling.org with a subscription.
