Cowboys Earn Top Seed In Columbia Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will be in search of the 67th NCAA Championship appearance in the 68-year history of the program this week when it begins NCAA Regional action on Thursday at Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Cowboys will be the No. 1 seed in the regional and will begin play at 8:00 a.m. (CST) at the par-72, 7,141-yard layout. OSU will be grouped with second-seeded Virginia and No. 3 seed LSU. The 54-hole event will also feature 18 holes on Friday and Saturday. The top five teams and top individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be conducted May 23-May 28, at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. OSU In Regional Play
OSU has won nine regional titles dating back to 1989. That year, the three-regional system was implemented and used until 2008. During that time, the Cowboys competed in the Central Regional every year, winning titles in 1989, 1990, 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2006. The 2009 campaign marked the first time a six-regional format was used. OSU hosted the South Central Regional and won its seventh regional title that year. In 2010, the Cowboys took the top spot at the Southeast Regional and OSU won the Colorado Regional in 2011. Nine times a Cowboy has claimed medalist honors at the event with Kevin Tway winning in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Kevin Wentworth (1989, 1990), Alan Bratton (1995), Bo Van Pelt (1997), Jonathan Moore (2006) and Peter Uihlein (2010) have also been regional medalists.
NCAA Rewind ... 2013 Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team rebounded from a tough second round with a 292 closing score at the 2013 NCAA Fayetteville Regional at Blessings Golf Club to secure the 66th NCAA Championship berth in the 67-year history of the program. The Cowboys shaved 12 shots off their 304 tally during the second round, posting a 4-over third round to finish fourth and grab one of the regional's five qualifying spots. OSU's third-round score was the second lowest on the day to Illinois' 1-over 289. The Cowboys finished at 882, 18-over, and two shots behind Texas for third. Illinois claimed the regional title at 863, while Arkansas was second at 866. Kent State grabbed the fifth spot at 892.
What 2 Watch 4
· All four of OSU's victories this season came consecutively. The four-tournament winning streak marked the fifth time the Cowboys have won four in a row in program history and is tied for sixth on the school's all-time list of winning streaks. It was also OSU's longest string since reeling off five victories in a row in 1994-95.
· The Cowboys will be looking for their fifth victory of the season, which would be its most since winning eight times in 2010-11.
· Talor Gooch enters the event with a string of four consecutive top 10s after tying for third place at the Big 12 Championship.
· Gooch has made three regional starts with his best showing coming in 2011 when he finished third.
· Jordan Niebrugge tied for 10th place in his first regional start last year.
