WATERLOO, Iowa – Former Oklahoma State wrestler and All-American Cayle Byers and club coach for the Cowboys Frank Perrelli won their respective weight classes at last weekend's 2014 Northern Plains Senior Freestyle Regional.
The tournament served as a last chance qualifier for the World Team Trials. In order to qualify, competitors had to win their weight class.
Perrelli, a former All-American from Cornell University, wrestled at 57 kilograms and only gave up seven points during the entire tournament. He bookended his tournament action with wins by technical superiority over Doug Miner, 10-0, and Clayton Rush, 12-2.
Byers, who spent his senior year at OSU and placed third at the 2012 NCAA Championships, won the title at 97 kilos. He took easy victories in his first two rounds before defeating Ryan Flores of the Sooner Wrestling Club, 6-5, in the finals.
Byers and Perrelli, as well as several others connected to OSU, will wrestle at the World Team Trials on May 31 and June 1 in Madison, Wisc.
