STILLWATER - "Five Questions" is a series that catches up with members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team during the off-season. This installment features Nolan Boyd. His comments:
On what he accomplished last season
"Last season I had a few goals. I had the goal to get the starting spot, because that's the first thing you have to do. My second goal was to have a season where I could qualify for nationals and then All-American. Obviously, I only made two of those goals – making the team, which was a constant fight all year, and then qualifying for nationals. The All-American was not there, I didn't wrestle well at all. I'd say those two were my only accomplishments this year."
On the position changes he endured all season
"Coach wanted whoever it was to get the starting spot to have the hardest challenge ever to get that spot, so they'd be ready for nationals. My job was to get the starting spot, keep the starting spot and score as many points for the team as I could. Whenever I wasn't starting, if I got beat in a ranking match or something – I had nine ranking matches, so it's possible – my job was to go out there at 197 and be a warm-up partner; just help the team in whatever way possible."
On his favorite memories from the season
"It was kind of fun getting stuck in airports all the time and watching people get so mad. It didn't really feel like a big deal, but it was cool getting to hang out with everybody at the airport and having to find something to do. We spent a lot of time in airports, so that was pretty fun."
On how he can improve for next year
"Same thing I did last summer, which is grind all summer and work out all summer. Whenever people are going home on the weekends, I'll stay there and find a good workout partner and scrap it out. I'll try to get as much mat-time as I can during the summer."
On his goals for next year
"Next year, definitely getting the starting spot, earning All-American and becoming a National Champ – whatever is possible. Just keep working and you'll find out what's possible."
