FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
Oklahoma State's men's and women's track and field teams put up a plethora of NCAA-qualifying marks and lit up OSU's all-time outdoor record lists in day two of the John McDonnell Invitational, in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls combined to set 17 new personal bests, and registered 10 marks that will now appear on OSU's all-time top 10 lists in their respective events.
Leading the way for the Cowboys was sprinter John Teeters, who ran a blistering 10.21 to finish second in the 100 meter dash, and put up a 20.75 in the 200 meter dash, taking third. Teeters' 100 meter time now ranks No. 4 in both the NCAA West region and on OSU's all-time list. His mark in the 200 meters is tied for fourth in OSU history, and lands him at No. 10 in the West region.
“It was a nice day for John,” OSU sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. “To open with those times, regardless of wind, goes to show how bright the rest of the season will be for him. We knew he was capable of a performance like this and he just continues to improve.”
Two more quick times from the Cowboys came in the 800 meters. Chad Noelle (1:49.72) and Tyler Payton (1:50.41) took second and third in the event and registered the No. 9 and No. 21 800 meter times in the West region, respectively.
In the throwing events, Itamar Levi had a solid day for the Cowboys. He registered a throw of 18.05m/59-2.75 to win the shot put, and took second in the discus with a throw of 48.29m/158-5. His mark in the shot put is No. 3 on OSU's all-time list, and ranks No. 15 in the West region.
It was just as impressive of a day for the Cowgirls. Savannah Camacho, who usually makes her mark in the middle distance events, tried her hand at the 400 meters, and did not disappoint. She took second with a time of 54.66, which ranks third in OSU history and No. 27 in the West region.
“Savannah is an incredibly special athlete,” OSU head coach Dave Smith said. “Although she already took second at indoor nationals in the 800 meters, I really think she is about to break onto the scene. She took third on our all-time list in an event she doesn't run. I'm completely blown away.”
Britney Presley, like Teeters did on the men's side, ran personal bests in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Her 11.95 in the 100 meters took fifth in the event and No. 7 on OSU's all-time list, and her 24.52 in the 200 meters was good enough for third in the event and No. 6 in OSU history.
“Britney Presley is just continuing to improve every day,” Flaquer said. “I'm excited to see what she can do as she continues to learn more about her events. More importantly, she is learning how to compete at this level.”
In the 4 x 400 meter relay, the team of Camacho, Ambra Wesley, Cydney Crook and Triana Browne-Hearrell took second, with a time of 3:50.06. That mark is No. 7 in OSU history.
Two Cowgirls registered great marks in the discus. Ieva Zarankaite won the event with a personal-best 54.34m/178-3, which cemented her status as No. 2 in OSU history, and Katie Kehl threw a mark of 46.59m/152-10 to take fourth in the event and No. 7 on OSU's all-time list. Zarankaite now holds the No. 10 spot in the West region.
“Ieva may have had the best day of anyone,” Smith said. “She walked in like she owned the place and went to work. She will have the school record before the year is over. It was just a great day for everyone. It was really tough with the wind, but I'm so proud of the entire team. Nobody made excuses. Even with the conditions, we were able to put up some great marks. I'm really proud of how hard the team competed.”
OSU track & field will return to action next weekend, April 17-19, at the Mt. SAC Relays, in Walnut, Calif., the John Jacobs Invitational, in Norman, Okla. and the Kansas Relays, in Lawrence, Kan.
