STILLWATER, Okla. – “Arriving Early” features interviews with the early enrollees at Oklahoma State this spring. This edition includes an interview with freshman running back Devon Thomas, who arrived in Stillwater this spring after finishing his high school career at Broken Arrow High School in Broken Arrow, Okla. His comments:
Running Back Devon Thomas
On his first semester of college
"So far it's pretty good. I made it out of winter workouts and now making it into spring."
On what he expected about college football workouts
"Everything that has been going on I kind of expected. I wasn't expecting it to be easy, and it's pretty tough now. That's what I was expecting."
On the hardest part
"Probably the running. Running is different. We didn't do this much conditioning in high school."
On a typical workout day
"In the morning we'd wake up pretty early and get our lift in. After lift, we'll go to class or back home. Then we start practice a little after noon. After practice we go to the training table, and then we go back home and start over the next day."
On the biggest differences between high school and college
"Game speed. Game speed is the biggest change. Going from drill to drill is really fast, and coming out and getting 11 on 11 and seeing how fast everybody changes up – seeing how the blitzes change and how the coverages change and how fast people react to the pass or the run is way different from high school."
On his first impressions on college
"It's great. I love it. I like being away from home and living with my roommates. Pretty much the freedom that we get I like."
On being an Oklahoma native attending Oklahoma State
"I never really had a plan on what college I was going to go to. I just wanted to go wherever fit me best. Coming to OSU just felt right. It was similar to my high school, so it didn't really change much, but added on."
On playing close to friends
"It makes it a little bit more comforting because I'll be able to have my parents come to all the home games, so I'm not really far away. I'm only an hour away, so if I get homesick I can just drive home."
On the OSU facilities
"We did have a lot in high school. My high school was really big, but OSU is a big step up – all the facilities. The weight room is huge. It's a big step up."
