OKLAHOMA CITY - Cowboys Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden helped keep the Cowboys tied for second place with Kindig upsetting No. 6 seed Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska and Marsden knocking off 2013 NCAA finalist Mike McMullan.
"Overall we had a round that we had to get tough in after losing a couple early," coach John Smith said. "We reeled off five straight in the championship. That's something you like to see. We'll just have to come back tomorrow. We'll have eight guys. It's a tough tournament, but overall not a bad day for us."
After the Pokes went 0-4 to start session two, Kindig went head-to-head with Sueflohn at 149 pounds. Kindig picked up two takedowns in the first period and held onto the lead, earning an escape in the second period and another takedown in the third to take the 7-5 victory.
"I just went out like every other match and wanted to put points on the board. It came down to a close one," Kindig said. "The kid's a goer. I'm a goer too, though. I came in seeded lower than him, but I don't call it an upset. That's the wrong word. More like, 'surprise' is probably better. I'm on the same level. Seeds don't matter. Coach has been telling us that from the beginning of the tournament. I just went out there and did what I usually do."
Shortly after Kindig's match, Alex Dieringer pinned Mizzou's Joey LaVallee in 1:38, giving him his second bonus-point victory of the day.
Tyler Caldwell and Chris Perry followed with almost simultaneous wins. Perry picked up more bonus points for the Pokes with an 11-3 major decision over Tony Dallago of Illinois, while Caldwell earned a 9-2 decision over 15th-seed Danny Zilverberg of Minnesota.
To wrap up the second round in the championship bracket, the Cowboys made a point with heavyweight and sophomore Marsden taking out No. 6 seed McMullan of Northwestern, 3-2.
Marsden scored a takedown with one second left in the second period to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the final two minutes. McMullan racked up more than a minute of riding time, but Marsden's escape with 46 seconds left that kept the match out of reach for the Wildcat.
"Coach (Smith) just told me to have a positive mindset, switch up my style and try to be more offensive; attacking more," Marsden said. "He just kept repeating that to me and that's why I did it. I got to control the pace, create the action, and once you do that you get on top."
Eight OSU wrestlers are still alive in the tourney, with the Cowboys sending five to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, which takes place in Friday's morning session beginning at 10 a.m. in Chesapeake Energy Arena.
