Quoting The Coaches
Sprints Coach Diego Flaquer
On maintaining the momentum of the great start to the season:
“The main thing for me, is putting them in the right competitions and allowing them to understand what it will take to be successful in the Big 12 and on the national level. They won't do anything different than what they have been doing. It's mostly mental from here. The meets are what will help us sharpen technique. That's the biggest thing--communicating with them, cleaning up technique and allowing them to recover.”
Throws Coach John Baumann
On what he expects of his throwers this weekend:
“The expectation level is a little higher. We're halfway through the season and are expecting better results as we move toward the Big 12 meet. We've been training hard since the start of the semester, so they aren't rested. As a result, the marks they've been putting up are more like training marks than anything--even Nick's big opener was his first time touching the weight. The biggest thing here, is getting them into a more competitive field to prepare them for the conference meet.”
Twice As Nice
Kirubel Erassa had a great weekend at the Razorback Invite, where he was responsible for two event wins and 20 meet points.
On Friday, Erassa was the anchor leg of OSU's distance medley relay. The Cowboys were behind Arkansas when Erassa got the baton, but his late charge was enough for the win. The DMR's time of 9:39.00 ranks No. 9 in the nation.
On Saturday, Erassa was at it again in the 3,000 meters. Leading for a good portion of the race, Erassa led a trio of Cowboys finishing 1-2-3 in the event. Erassa's time of 7:54.05 now stands as the No. 5 time in the event in the NCAA.
Throw It Down
The OSU throwers exploded on to the scene in 2013, and in 2014 they're picking up where they left off. Nick Miller kicked off his season by breaking his own school record in the weight throw at the KSU Wildcat Invite. His mark of 21.94m/71-11.75 is the No. 6 throw in the nation.
Itamar Levi also had a big day in Manhattan, launching the sixth-best shot put in OSU history, a 16.96m/55-7.75 toss.
On the women's side, Chase Ealey has placed in the top three in the shot put at each meet in which she has competed. Caitlin Way has placed in the top 10 in the weight throw at each meet in which she has competed.
Full Speed Ahead
The sprint events have not been a major factor for OSU track and field in recent years, but newly-hired Sprints Coach Diego Flaquer is on the way to changing that.
Under Flaquer, both the OSU men's and women's indoor 60 meter records have already been challenged this season. John Teeters ran a 6.71 at the Razorback Invite, just off the school record of 6.70, and at the KSU Wildcat Invite, Britney Presley ran a 7.65, just missing the school record of 7.63.
Last Year At The Husker Invite
Nick Miller led a trio of top-10 finishes for Oklahoma State in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.
On Friday, Miller, who entered the meet ranked No. 3 in the nation in the weight throw, launched the weight 20.97m/68-09.75, which was a personal best and tied for the longest throw of the meet, but No. 4 Jon Lehman of Minnesota had a better second-best throw, giving him the victory in the event over Miller.
In the women's weight throw, Caitlin Way just missed out on the finals, finishing ninth. She achieved a distance of 17.65m/57-11.00.
On Saturday, in the women's shot put, Chase Ealey also landed a ninth-place finish, heaving the shot a distance of 15.15m/49-08.50.
Last Time Out
Kirubel Erassa, Shane Moskowitz and Chad Noelle went 1-2-3 in the 3,000 meter invitational to lead Oklahoma State track and field in day two of the Razorback Invitational, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Erassa, one day removed from a comeback victory in the distance medley relay, ran a 7:54.05 to win the 3,000 meter invitational. Shane Moskowitz ran a personal-best 7:57.79 to take second, and Chad Noelle finished in 7:59.64 to take third.
Nick Miller was his usual dominant self in the weight throw. His best mark of the day, a 20.25m/66-5.25 toss, was good enough to win the event by 0.67 meters.
In the 60 meter dash, John Teeters had a brush with school history for the second-straight day. His 6.72 in the 60 meters was good enough for second place in the event, .01 off his personal best he ran in the preliminaries and .02 off the OSU 60 meter record.
On the women's side, Savannah Camacho and Kaela Edwards took first and second in the 800 meter invitational. Camacho (2:05.41) and Edwards (2:05.59) not only ran personal-best times, but also took the No. 2 and No. 3 spots on OSU's all-time 800 meter list. They are also now ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in the NCAA in the event.
In The Rankings
The Oklahoma State women's track and field team jumped into the nation's top 25, debuting at No. 24, in the USTFCCCA poll.
This is the second time the Cowgirls have been ranked in the top 25 since the inception of the USTFCCCA poll, the other being week five of 2013 when OSU rose to No. 22.
Individually, the Cowgirls have four athletes ranked in the NCAA top 50 in their respective events after a strong showing at last weekend's Razorback Invitational. Savannah Camacho (2:05.41) and Kaela Edwards (2:05.59) lead the way, holding the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively, in the nation, after their near school-record 800 meter run in Fayetteville.
Monika Juodeskaite (4:46.39) has the NCAA's No. 37 time in the mile, and Viktoriia Sadokhina (12.45m/40-10.25) is No. 42 in the nation in the triple jump.
On the men's side, OSU slid one spot to No. 11, making it seven-straight polls in which the Cowboys have been ranked in the top 11, the longest such stretch in school history. OSU is the highest-ranked team in the Big 12.
Individually, John Teeters (6.71) moved up to No. 23 in the NCAA in the 60 meters. The trio who went 1-2-3 in the 3,000 meters in Fayetteville, Kirubel Erassa (7:54.05), Shane Moskowitz (7:57.79) and Chad Noelle (7:59.64), have the No. 5, No. 10 and No. 13 3,000 meter times in the nation.
Nick Miller's record-setting weight throw of 21.94m/71-11.75 from the KSU Wildcat Invite ranks sixth in the nation, and the distance medley relay's time of 9:39.00 holds the No. 9 spot in the NCAA.
A New Home
OSU track and field now has a new state-of-the-art facility to call home. The new complex was finished in the summer of 2013, and the teams have already started using it for practice. The complex is home to new locker rooms, a large team room and a large training room, among other brand new features for the teams to enjoy.
