AMES, Iowa -
Powered by two event wins and five All Big-12 performances, Oklahoma State men's track and field is leading the team scoring after day one at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships, in Ames, Iowa.
The Cowboys have 39 team points through five events, six points ahead of second-place Kansas State.
“We're pretty much right where we need to be, maybe even a little ahead of where I was hoping,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “We had a couple spots where we didn't get what we thought we could, but there were a couple guys who did better than we thought they would. It balanced out well. We have a long way to go, but we have a lot of guys in the finals tomorrow. We're right where we need to be.”
The shining performance of the night came in the 5,000 meters, where Kirubel Erassa (first place), Shane Moskowitz (second place) and Brian Gohlke (fourth place) combined to score a colossal 23 team points.
“Kirubel Erassa and Shane Moskowitz are incredible athletes,” Smith said. “They're confident and experienced. They really want to win this team title, and they're going to have a very busy weekend to try to help us do it. It was a great start for them. Brian Gohlke was awesome. He ran a great race. He did a little better than we expected. He helped us get one step closer to where we need to be.”
In the men's weight throw, Miller, the defending Big 12 champion, entered the competition with marks that were far superior to his competition, and he didn't disappoint. He won the event with a launch of 20.63m/67-8.25, almost 2.5 farther than the second place throw.
In the 60 meter semifinals, Tyreek Hill and John Teeters both qualified for the finals. Hill won his heat, with a time of 6.72.
Hill wasn't done there.
In the 200 meters, Hill, knowing he had his heat won, shut it down a little at the end of his run, and still clocked a school record-breaking 21.16. The previous record was a 21.39, ran by Harold Green at the 1989 Big 8 Championships. Hill is the second-fastest qualifier for the final. It's the third-straight meet in which Hill has taken down a meet or school record. The men's distance medley relay took third place, picking up another six team points for the Cowboys.
In the men's mile, Kirubel Erassa, Shane Moskowitz and Luis Martinez all qualified for tomorrow's final, meaning all three will score valuable team points for the Cowboys.
In the 600 yard run, Tyler Payton ran a personal-best 1:11.10, which is the No. 6 time in OSU history, and qualified him for tomorrow's final.
In the men's 1,000 meters, Justin Vilhauer and Chad Noelle ran the third and fourth-best qualifying times, qualifying for tomorrow's final.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls picked up three All-Big 12 performances. Kristine Helle set a new personal best in the 5,000 meters, running a 16:33.99 to take fourth place.
Caitlin Way scored in the weight throw for the second-straight year, finishing in seventh. In the distance medley relay, OSU finished fourth, in 11:37.19, to pick up five team points.
In the 1,000 meters, Savannah Camacho ran the fastest qualifying time, a 2:51.80. Adela Hofmannova had the third-fastest time, a 2:51.98, also automatically qualifying for the final.
The Cowgirls picked up another top qualifier in the 800 meters. Kaela Edwards, ranked No. 12 in the NCAA in the event, ran a 2:07.86 to snag the top spot. Clara Nichols also qualified for the final, with a 2:08.38
In the women's mile, Caileigh Glenn took third in her heat, with a personal-best 4:49.07, automatically qualifying for tomorrow's final.
The Big 12 Indoor Championships will conclude tomorrow, with field events starting at noon, and running events beginning at 1:30 p.m.
