Oklahoma State vs. Teams From Texas
Oklahoma State is 22-4 in its last 26 games against teams from the state of Texas, dating back to 2009. The Cowboys were a perfect 6-0 against teams from the Lone Star State in 2013, highlighted by convincing road wins at No. 15 Texas Tech and at No. 23 Texas plus a 49-17 pounding of No. 3 Baylor in Stillwater.
The Pokes are 2-1 vs. Texas-based schools this season, with wins over UTSA and Texas Tech. OSU's last 26 games against teams from Texas:
Last Year's Meeting - Oklahoma State 38, No. 23 Texas 13
Playing without top offensive playmaker Josh Stewart, Oklahoma State beat No. 23 Texas in Austin, 38-13.
Justin Gilbert intercepted two passes, returning one 43 yards for a touchdown just before halftime to give the Cowboys a 28-10 lead and effectively put the game out of reach. Quarterback Clint Chelf rushed for a pair of first-half touchdowns and passed for an additional two scores to spur the Cowboy offense. Chelf completed 16-of-22 passes for 197 yards and two scores and rushed for a career-high 95 yards in the contest.
The win was Oklahoma State's third straight in Austin, making OSU only the third team since World War II to beat Texas on three consecutive trips to the Longhorns' home turf.
Blocked Kicks Part of OSU's Arsenal
With four blocked kicks, Oklahoma State leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth nationally. Safety Jordan Sterns blocked a punt, defensive tackle James Castleman blocked a PAT attempt and defensive tackle Ofa Hautau blocked a field goal attempt, with all three of those blocks coming in the first half of OSU's win over Missouri State.
Three blocked kicks in a game set a Big 12 record and marked only the second time in NCAA history that a team blocked a PAT, field goal and punt in the same game. Oregon State accomplished the feat in 1996 against USC.
Sterns was also credited with a blocked punt at Kansas State.
Non-Offensive Touchdowns an OSU Staple
Non-offensive touchdowns have been a regular part of the Oklahoma State attack in recent years, as the Cowboys have 29 non-offensive scores since the start of the 2010 season - a mark that ranks second in the nation during that span. With four non-offensive touchdowns in 2014 (Ashton Lampkin returned an interception for a touchdown against UTSA, Tyreek Hill took kickoffs to paydirt against Iowa State and Kansas and Ramon Richards returned an interception for a score at Kansas State), the trend continues.
Non-Offensive Touchdowns, NCAA Leaders Since 2010
1. Oregon - 31
2. Oklahoma State - 29
3. Utah - 27
4. Florida - 25
4. Missouri - 25
6. Oklahoma - 23
6. Toledo - 23
Special Teams Performing at a High Level
Special teams have long been a strength for Oklahoma State under Mike Gundy. This year's squad ranks among the nation's most proficient at blocking kicks. Additionally, OSU is one of only nine schools in the nation with two kickoff returns for touchdowns, ranks fifth nationally in field goals made per game and ranks among the best teams in the country in net punting, punt return defense and kickoff return defense.
Punt Coverage Unit Getting it Done
Oklahoma State has been solid when it comes to covering punts, as the Cowboys allow only 3.62 yards per punt return to rank 14th nationally. The Cowboys allowed a 31-yard punt return against UTSA, but OSU's other 53 punts have yielded a total of only 45 return yards (0.85 average).
Consequently, OSU's net punting average is 40.26, which is second in the Big 12 and ranks 16th in the nation.
