Dieringer Defeats Sulzer at All-Star Classic
November 01, 2014 | Cowboy Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA – Oklahoma State wrestlers Alex Dieringer and Josh Kindig started off the 2014-15 wrestling season competing at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dieringer, a returning national champion for the Cowboys, took on two-time All-American and second-ranked Nick Sulzer of Virginia in the night's opening match.
In his debut bout at 165 pounds, Dieringer came out forceful, picking up the first and only takedown less than a minute into the match. The Cowboy took the 2-1 lead and 1:02 of riding time into the second period, where he started in the down position and tallied the escape in only four seconds. In the third period, Sulzer produced an escape, but it was Dieringer who took the match, 4-2, with a solid 1:29 of riding time to secure the win.
In the 149-pound bout, 2014 NCAA finalist Kindig faced defending national champion Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern in a NCAA finals rematch.
After a scoreless first period, Kindig started the second in the bottom position, where he quickly escaped to earn the first point of the match. Tsirtsis responded with a takedown and rode out the Cowboy for the remainder of the period. The Wildcat then took at 3-1 lead with an escape to start the third period. Although Kindig spent the majority of the final period on offense, it was not enough as Tsirtsis sealed the win, 4-1, with riding time advantage.
The Cowboys will start the dual season on Nov. 16 in Miami, Okla., with a double header against Northeastern Oklahoma and South Dakota State.
