Smith Named Ray Guy Award Player of the Week
October 27, 2014 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Kip Smith has been named the Ray Guy Award Player of the Week, the Augusta Sports Council announced today.
Smith punted five times against West Virginia, with four of those being downed inside the 20. Smith's five punts yielded a grand total of negative-one return yard, and he boomed a career-long 71-yard punt in the contest. He was also effective as a kickoff specialist, using his hang time and directional kicking prowess to limit the Mountaineers to 10.5 yards per kickoff return. To put that into perspective, WVU entered the contest ranking sixth nationally with 26.43 yards per kickoff return.
On the season, Smith has averaged 43.3 yards per punt on 45 punts. He has 12 punts of at least 50 yards and has downed 15 inside the 20-yard line. Smith's efforts have resulted in Oklahoma State leading the Big 12 and ranking ninth nationally in net punting.
Oklahoma State has a history with the Ray Guy Award, as Matt Fodge won the trophy in 2008.
In addition to his Ray Guy Award Player of the Week honor, Smith was also recognized by the College Football Performance Awards as the Punter Performer of the Week.
Smith's CFPA honor marks the fourth time this season a Cowboy has received a CFPA Performer of the Week Award.
