Hill Named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
October 13, 2014 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Tyreek Hill is this week's Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Not only did Hill make a game-winning play when he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown with 6:43 remaining in a tie ballgame, but he also made Oklahoma State history by becoming the first Cowboy to return a kickoff for a touchdown in back-to-back games. Hill is the only player in the country to accomplish that feat this season.
The threat of Hill's presence as a return man was apparent all game, as Kansas elected to pooch kick away from him throughout the contest. It wasn't until the Jayhawks' final kickoff of the game that they chose to give Hill an opportunity, and that one touch was all he needed to lift the Cowboys to victory.
It is the first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor for the junior from Pearson, Ga., and it is the third conference player of the week honor for a Cowboy this year.
The Cowboys had nine different players combine for 12 Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the 2013 season, setting a league record for most players from a single team to earn Big 12 weekly honors during the course of a season and matching the 2000 Oklahoma team's conference record for most total honorees from one team in a season.
Hill was also honored today as the College Football Performance Awards National Kickoff Returner Performer of the Week. It is his second consecutive week to receive that honor.
Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah joined Hill as a CFPA Performer of the Week selection as the sophomore out of Houston, Texas received the Defensive Lineman Performer of the Week honor. Ogbah enjoyed a record-setting day by registering 5.5 tackles for loss in Oklahoma State's win at Kansas. Ogbah's 5.5 tackles for loss set an OSU single-game record, were the most for any player in the country this season and were the most for a Big 12 player since 2009.
Oklahoma State players have earned a total of three CFPA Performer of the Week awards this season.
