The Sunday Wrap - Cowboys were 27-20 winners over Kansas
October 12, 2014 | Cowboy Football
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play with a 27-20 win at Kansas Saturday.
The defining moment of the game came when Tyreek Hill returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown with 6:43 left to break a 20-20 tie. Following Hill's score, the Cowboy defense forced a three-and-out and then on the next possession, sealed the game when Josh Furman intercepted a pass with 1:11 remaining.
Nothing came easy for the Cowboy offense, as the Jayhawks limited the Pokes to 275 yards of total offense on 4.0 yards per play. Still, OSU found a way to keep Kansas at bay and never trailed past the first quarter thanks to a defense that held KU to six three-and-outs and 2.2 yards per rush.
Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah set a school record with 5.5 tackles for loss in the contest and running back Desmond Roland extended his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown to seven.
The Oklahoma State Win...
Marked the Cowboys' fifth straight over the Jayhawks and their 10th in the last 11 series meetings.
Was the Cowboys' sixth straight over the Jayhawks in Lawrence. Kansas hasn't beaten OSU in Memorial Stadium since 1994.
Marked the Cowboys' fourth straight in a Big 12 road game to match OSU's second-longest such streak since the league was formed in 1996. The longest came when OSU won eight straight Big 12 road games spanning from the 2010 season into the 2011 season. The Cowboys won four straight Big 12 road games spanning from the 2008 to the 2009 season.
Improved the Cowboys to 3-0 in Big 12 play to mark the fourth time during the Mike Gundy era that OSU's conference record was perfect through three games. The Pokes previously accomplished that feat in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
Improved the Cowboys to 19-7 in their last 26 road games and 16-6 in their last 22 road games against Big 12 opponents.
Improved the Cowboys to 36-4 in their last 40 games against unranked opponents, dating back to 2010.
Standouts against Kansas
Offense
RB Desmond Roland | 6-2 | 210 | Senior | Dallas, TX/Lake Highlands
Running back Desmond Roland carried 21 times for a hard-fought 87 yards and scored on a 33-yard run in the first quarter to help Oklahoma State to a road win over Kansas. He has now scored at least one touchdown in each of his last seven games and has found the end zone 11 times overall during that span. Including his performance against the Jayhawks, Roland's top four rushing performances of the season have come in his last four games.
Defense
DE Emmanuel Ogbah | 6-4 | 270 | Sophomore | Houston, TX/George Bush
Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah enjoyed a record-setting day by registering 5.5 tackles for loss in Oklahoma State's win at Kansas. Ogbah's 5.5 tackles for loss set an OSU single-game record, were the most for any player in the country this season and were the most for a Big 12 player since 2009. Also notable is that Ogbah was at his best when the Cowboys needed him most Saturday, registering 6.5 of his 9.5 tackles and 4.5 of his 5.5 tackles for loss in the second half of a close game. Ogbah also had two sacks in the contest.
Special Teams
ATH Tyreek Hill | 5-10 | 185 | Junior | Pearson, GA/Coffee/Garden City CC
Not only did Tyreek Hill make a game-winning play when he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown with only 6:43 remaining in a tie ballgame, but he also made Oklahoma State history in the process by becoming the first Cowboy to return a kickoff for a touchdown in back-to-back games. He is the only player in the country to accomplish that feat this season. Just the threat of Hill's presence as a return man was apparent all game, as Kansas elected to pooch kick away from him throughout the contest. It wasn't until the Jayhawks' final kickoff of the game that they chose to give Hill an opportunity and that one touch was all he needed to lift the Cowboys to victory.
