SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. - Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge closed out the 44th Walker Cup on Sunday with an impressive 6-and-5 victory over Great Britain and Ireland's Jordan Smith to help the United States to a 17-9 victory at National Golf Links of America.
The singles victory gave the Cowboy sophomore a 2-2 mark for the event. Niebrugge teamed with Patrick Rodgers during Sunday morning's foursome matches, falling to GB&I's Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan, 2 up.
During the afternoon session, Niebrugge blitzed Smith with three-straight birdies to open the match with a 3-up lead. After halving Nos. 4 and 5, the Mequon, Wis., native birdied his next three holes to take a commanding 6-up advantage through eight holes.
Smith posted his lone win of the day at the 11th and Niebrugge closed out the match two holes later with a par at the 13th hole.
Niebrugge's 2-0 mark during the event's singles play capped an impressive match play run that began this past summer, finishing the stretch with an 18-1 record.
Following six wins at the WSGA Match Play Championship, he also posted six victories at the U.S. Public Links Championship and four more at the Western Amateur Championship. Niebrugge's lone loss came at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
