ROLAND, Ark. - Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge continued his impressive run through the 2013 summer amateur circuit with his 3-and-2 win over Sean Dale on Monday at the 111th Western Amateur Championship at The Alotian Club.
The victory was Niebrugge's third in as many starts and his fourth overall this summer. In June, he won the Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play Championship. He won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship to close out July before opening August with his victory at the prestigious Western Golf Association event.
The Mequon, Wis., native became the first Cowboy to win the Western Amateur since Scott Verplank in 1985.
The match was halted yesterday due to weather with the two players all square through eight holes. Niebrugge won the first three holes after play resumed Monday morning. After the next three holes were halved, Dale birdied the 15th to pull within two. However, Niebrugge closed out the match with a win at the 16th hole.
Niebrugge finished third during the 72-hole stroke play portion of the event, posting scores of 66, 69, 70 and 72 for an 11-under total of 277.
The rising sophomore opened match play with a 4-and-3 win over Cowboy teammate Talor Gooch before knocking off Seth Reeves, 3 and 1, to advance to the semifinals. Niebrugge birdied the last two holes of his semifinal match to rally to a 1-up win over Sebastian Cappelan.
