LORTON, Va. - Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge rolled to a pair of victories on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hills Golf Club.
Niebrugge defeated Kyle Weldon in the second round, 6 and 4, before knocking off Justin Shin, 5 and 3, to earn a spot among the final eight competitors. The Mequon, Wis., native has played only 44 holes through three matches, winning 18 holes and losing just three during that stretch.
The rising sophomore started his day against Weldon and birdied Nos. 1 and 3 to take a 2-up lead. Niebrugge added wins at the fifth, seventh and ninth to make the turn with a 5-up cushion. After four consecutive halves to start his second nine, Niebrugge birdied the par-3 14th to advance to the third round.
Against Shin, Niebrugge birdied the first three holes en route to a 2-up lead and added a birdie and a par at the fifth and sixth to move to 3-up. With another birdie at the ninth, Niebrugge took a commanding 4-up advantage. The two players halved the first five holes of the inward nine before Niebrugge closed out the match with an eagle at the par-5 15th.
Rising senior Ian Davis defeated Trevor Cone, 2 and 1, in the second round before suffering a 2-up defeat in the round of 16 to Robby Shelton IV.
Niebrugge will take on Zecheng Dou at 7:15 a.m. (EST) with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
