LORTON, Va. - Two of Oklahoma State's three participants advanced to the second round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship with Ian Davis and Jordan Niebrugge moving into the round of 32 at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Davis, a rising senior, knocked off Greg Condon by a 2-and-1 count in his first-round match. A sophomore-to-be, Niebrugge used a 4-and-3 win over Michael Schmitmeyer to advance. Rising senior Talor Gooch fell in 19 holes to Justin Shin.
Davis finished as the runner-up during the stroke play portion of the event with a 6-under 134 total, while Gooch was tied for fifth at 137. Niebrugge advanced to match play after tying for 11th place at 138.
Davis carded a birdie on his first hole to take a lead he would not surrender against Condon. He stretched the lead with a par at the third to take a 2-up advantage. Davis won the seventh and eighth after Condon had pulled back within one. Condon took the 11th , but the final six holes were halved to send Davis on.
Like Davis, Niebrugge never trailed in his match, winning three of the first four holes to take command against Schmitmeyer. With a win at the ninth, he made the turn with a 4-up lead before Schmitmeyer won the 10th, but could get no closer. Niebrugge won the 12th and the duo halved the final three holes to close out the match.
Gooch and Shin halved the first four holes of their match before Gooch won the fifth with a par and made the turn with a 2-up lead with an eagle at the par-5 ninth. Shin won the 10th and 11th to square the match before using a birdie at the 12th for his first lead. Gooch answered with a birdie on the 13th to level the match. The two players traded birdies at the 17th and 18th to move to extra holes where Shin prevailed with a par on the par-4 first.
