SECAUCUS, N.J. – Oklahoma State senior Randy McCurry was drafted on the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday. He was the 23rd-round pick (690th overall) of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
McCurry, a native of Tupelo, Okla., spent the majority of his OSU career as a pitcher but took over as the Cowboys' starting shortstop in 2013 and was drafted at that position by the Diamondbacks. In 57 games, he tied for the team lead with a .314 batting average, and his 41 RBIs tied for second. He led the Big 12 Conference with 21 doubles.
An All-Big 12 Second Team honoree as a utility player in both 2012 and 2013, McCurry finished his OSU career with a .294 batting average to go along with 26 doubles, seven home runs and 64 RBIs in 102 games.
On the mound, the right-hander made 72 appearances, which are tied for fourth on OSU's all-time list. His 12 career saves also rank fourth on the Cowboys' career list, and he compiled a 12-9 record and 2.97 ERA.
McCurry was one of two OSU players drafted this week, joining pitcher Jason Hursh, who was a first-round pick (31st overall) of the Atlanta Braves.
OSU also had five members of its 2014 signing class, each of them from the high school ranks, drafted this week: Carter Hope, RHP, (3rd round, Kansas City); Blake Hennessey, SS (19th round, LA Dodgers); Thomas Hatch, RHP (32nd round, Colorado); Andrew Rosa, SS (33rd round, Boston); and Garrett Williams, LHP (San Diego, 33rd round).
