Cowboys Return To NCAA Championship
For the 66th time in the 67-year history of the program, the Oklahoma State men's golf team will compete at the NCAA Championship. The Cowboys are back after seeing their historic run of 65 consecutive berths end last season. OSU advanced to this year's event, which will be conducted May 28-June 2, at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia. The event will consist of 54 holes of stroke play, which will determine the individual champion. The 16th-seeded Cowboys will begin play Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with LSU and Auburn. Those three squads will also play together on Wednesday and will start at 12:20 p.m. Thursday's third round will be grouped according to score. The top eight teams will then be placed in a match play bracket to decide the team champion. Match play will take place Friday through Sunday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
OSU In NCAA Play
OSU has won 10 NCAA titles and has produced eight individual national champions. The Cowboys last national title came in 2006, its first campaign under head coach Mike McGraw. That same year also resulted in OSU's most recent medalist in the event, Jonathan Moore. OSU's first NCAA crown came in 1963 under the guidance of Labron Harris. Former coach and current OSU athletics director Mike Holder captured eight titles, winning in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2000. Earl Moeller was OSU's first individual champion in 1953 and was followed by Grier Jones in 1968. David Edwards won in 1978 and was followed by Scott Verplank, Brian Watts an E.J. Pfister, who won consecutively from 1986-88. Charles Howell won in record-setting fashion in 2000 and was the program's seventh national champion.
NCAA Rewind ... 2011 Championship
The Cowboys saw their season draw to a close with a 3-2 loss to Augusta State in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek. The battle between the third-seeded Cowboys the No. 7 seed Jaguars moved back and forth all day in front of a massive orange and black contingent of fans before finally needing an extra hole to decide the outcome. The match came down to a battle between OSU's Sean Einhaus and ASU's Carter Newman in which Newman prevailed on the first extra hole. OSU's Talor Gooch made quick work of Olle Bengtsson, winning 7 and 5, to put OSU's first point on the board. OSU's Morgan Hoffmann battled all day with Mitchell Krywulycz before finally pulling off a 1-up victory to provide the squad's second point. ASU's Henrik Norlander knocked off Kevin Tway 3 and 1, while ASU's Patrick Reed made six birdies over his first eleven holes en route to an 8-and-7 win over junior Peter Uihlein.
